I chose to attend Fairmont State mainly because of the atmosphere. Upon visiting the campus, I knew this was somewhere that I could feel comfortable and at ease. Beginning college is a huge step, and going to a school where one can feel comfortable and at home makes the adjustment much easier. Also, I feel that Fairmont State is fully equipped to help me pursue my future as an English major and I am confident that I will be provided with the education I need to become a successful individual.
I am most surprised by the easy-going personalities of the professors. So far, they are all very friendly and create a comfortable learning atmosphere. Each instructor truly treats their students as adults, but also clearly cares about their performance and education.
Of course, coming into the program, I was extremely intimidated. So far, most of my anxieties have been eliminated through different Honors meetings and my first Honors Seminar class. I feel more confident that I have no need to worry. I know that I will benefit from the program.
Always consider your education first. Too many students follow friends or are afraid to go to a school where they will know no one. In the long run, the education you are gaining is the most important part of college. Also, remember an expensive education doesn’t mean a good education. There are plenty of schools with a cheaper tuition than other colleges where you can get the exact same level of education – sometimes better. Finally, chose a school where you feel comfortable and where you know you will thrive.
My current Honors courses have a smaller student count than my high school classes. This is great and will allow me to get to know my instructors on a more personal level and make them more accessible when I am in need of help.
