1. What is Project STEP?
Project STEP (Special Teachers for the Eastern Panhandle) is a collaborative program between RESA VIII and Fairmont State university. The program is designed to bring special education teachers to full-certification.
2. Is it “open” to anyone?
It is open to teachers in RESA VIII who will be teaching in a special education classroom and need to become fully certified.
3. What are the qualifications?
Besides meeting the qualifications in #2, prospective candidates must have a current WV teaching license and be eligible to add a Special Education endorsement, OR have a bachelors degree and desire a "Special Education Only" certification. Students must also meet FSU Graduate Studies admission requirements.
4. How will the courses be offered?
Course will be delivered using an on-line, web-based instruction program (WebCT/VISTA.) Students must be computer literate (not experts), self-motivated & self-regulated to be successful.Course requirements and assignments will be designed to be relevant to candidates’ classroom experiences.
5. What is the cost?
RESA VIII provides funding for this project by “underwriting” tuition. STEP Project students will pay approximately 50% less for coursework. Students may qualify for tuition reimbursement for the reduced tuition costs offered through the state. Your district personnel office and RESA VIII can assist with this process.
6. How do I apply?
If you meet the primary entrance requirements described previously, please submit the Graduate Studies application to RESA VIII, Lori Smith so she is aware of your participation in the project.
7. How many courses do I need to take?
The certification program consists of 21 graduate hours for individuals elementary certified; and 24 graduate hours for individuals secondary certified. The Special Education ONLY certification is 33 hours. You may have your transcripts evaluated if you believe you have taken courses that could be transferred. If you plan to complete the Master of Education degree, you will need to complete an additional 15 graduate hours.
8. When will the courses be offered?
Each course will be offered at least once each year with many courses offered several times a year.
9. How will I become certified?
Complete the course (certification) sequence AND PASS THE DESIGNATED TEST(S). Diana Phillips in the FSU Teacher Certification Office can also assist (304-367-4242).
10. Will these credits count towards a Master’s Degree?
Yes
11. Can I transfer credits count towards certification/a Master’s Degree?
Yes. Dr. Dempsey will have your transcripts evaluated and assist you.
