Leadership Studies

General Information

The Leadership Studies program is offered in a cooperative manner with Marshall University.  Students completing the program will receive a master's degree from Fairmont State University.  The courses will be delivered via an internet-based program that allows approximately 80% of the course work to be completed online.  Students generally will attend 4 live meeting per course at the Fairmont State University campus.  The student must have internet access and Microsoft Word software.

Students completing the program qualify for professional administrative certification as a PreK-Adult school principal in West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky.  Students seeking West Virginia licensure must also pass the Praxis II exam in administration and supervision (0410), complete the Center for Professional Development's training in evaluation skills and have a Master's Degree in an Education field from an accredited institution.  Recommendations for certification will be handled by Marshall University.

Students seeking certification as a school principal must provide a copy of (1) a valid teaching certificate and (2) proof of and a minimum of one-year of teaching experience at the time of admission to the program.

Program Requirements
  • Students must apply to Fairmont State and Marshall University.
  • Official undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts must be submitted.
  • Fulfillment of all Graduate Studies admissions requirements.
  • Passing score on Millers Analogy Test or a combined score of 800 on the Graduate Record Exam.
  • Students that hold a previous master's degree are exempt from the testing requirement.
  • Transfer course work for a degree program must not be older than seven years and must be from an NCATE accredited institution.
  • Transfer of credit forms must be completed upon admission to the degree program.
