Fairmont State GEAR UP is putting together a collection of stories from local first generation college student to show our GEAR UP students the positive effect that a post-secondary education had on their lives.
Some questions you may want to ask yourself to help tell your story:
- What is your background?
- What region did you live in?
- What obstacles did you face?
- Who were your parents?
- What were their jobs and educational background?
- What were their attitudes toward education?
- What institution did you attend for your post-secondary education?
- What did you go to school for?
- Why did you choose this institution?
- What was life at college like?
- What, if any, culture shock did you experience? How did you work around it?
- How has earning your post-secondary education affected your life? Your families life?
- What is some advice you'd give to current high school students who may be first generation as well?
