Ten Ways to be an Involved Parent
- Talk with your student regularly and listen carefully for hints as to his or her interests that could lead to a discussion on careers.
- Know the general college admission requirements and encourage your student to take classes throughout high school that fulfill theese requirements.
- Visit college campuses with your students. (GEAR UP offers free tickets to on-campus theater and sporting events.)
- Reward your student's achievements, no matter how small.
- Be informed about college entrance exams, such as the ACT, and the registration deadlines.
- Gather as much information as you can find on paying for college, financial aid, scholarships, grants, etc...
- Make certain your student knows that YOU believe in him/her.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences as well as special events, career fairs, parent workshops, etc...whenever possible. If you are unable to attend important events, contact someone who did attend and get an update.
- Show an active interest in your student's grades and GPA.
- Enroll in a Community Education or college class to update your skills or learn something new. (GEAR UP offers many free courses to parents thoughout the year.)
