Ten Ways to be an Involved Parent

  1. Talk with your student regularly and listen carefully for hints as to his or her interests that could lead to a discussion on careers.
  2. Know the general college admission requirements and encourage your student to take classes throughout high school that fulfill theese requirements.
  3. Visit college campuses with your students. (GEAR UP offers free tickets to on-campus theater and sporting events.)
  4. Reward your student's achievements, no matter how small.
  5. Be informed about college entrance exams, such as the ACT, and the registration deadlines.
  6. Gather as much information as you can find on paying for college, financial aid, scholarships, grants, etc...
  7. Make certain your student knows that YOU believe in him/her.
  8. Attend parent-teacher conferences as well as special events, career fairs, parent workshops, etc...whenever possible. If you are unable to attend important events, contact someone who did attend and get an update.
  9. Show an active interest in your student's grades and GPA.
  10. Enroll in a Community Education or college class to update your skills or learn something new. (GEAR UP offers many free courses to parents thoughout the year.)
