The time has come to apply for Fairmont State GEAR UP's annual Computer Scholarship. Over the past 5 years, GEAR UP has awarded 678 students with computers valued at over $966,000, and we're looking forward to doing the same thing again this year for more deserving students.
This year, winners will receive a Toshiba Laptop, a printer, and a jump drive.
Additionally, the systems will be loaded with:
- Microsoft Windows 7
- Microsoft Office Suite 2010
- NetNanny Parental Control and Internet Filter (90 day subscription)
- McAfee Anti-Virus
The laptop will also be covered by a warranty in case of accidental damage or machine defect.
We won't send it home without you knowing how to use it either. At the awards ceremony where you will receive the laptop on May 15, 2011 at Fairmont State University, we will hold trainings for parents and students so each group will know exactly how to make full use of your new system!
All registered GEAR UP juniors and seniors at any of Fairmont State GEAR UP's 22 high schools are invited to apply. The only students in this group who are excluded are prior winners; however, if you are a senior this year and you won a desktop computer in a previous year you may apply again this year.
Application forms were handed out at your schools in December, however, if you lost your copy and need a new one, you may download it here.
Applications must be filled out by hand in ink and returned to the GEAR UP staff at your school so that it may be submitted to the GEAR UP office by March 1, 2011. The deadline to submit your application differs from school to school, check with your GEAR UP Site Coordinator or Liaison for the exact date.
All information submitted in the application will be kept confidential and not shared with anyone!
Tips:
- Remember that portions of the application not filled out will cause your application to be scored lower, please take your time and read the instructions carefully so that you fill out each section properly!
- Nobody has perfect handwriting, and we understand that -- but make sure that it is legible.
- Two teacher recommendations from current or past teachers are required. Try to find a teacher that made a real impact on your life so that their letter of recommendation is special and specific to you, not just a form letter. Try to contact them and ask them for their letters of recommendation long before the deadline so there isn't a rush at the last minute to contact the teacher and get the letter written.
