This is an update on the WebCT Vista system, and it addresses some of your most frequently asked questions.

First, I would like to thank all of you for your patience as we worked through our first transition to a new semester with Vista.  For the most part, things went fairly smoothly.  However, as most of you now know, Vista is very different from WebCT Campus Edition in many ways.

  • The list of classes that appear on MyWebCT comes directly from the schedule of courses in Banner.  The only way to change the listing in Vista is to change the listing in Banner.
  • The instructor associated with each class also comes directly from the schedule of courses in Banner.  Therefore, any instructor changes must be made in Banner.  Once made in Banner, it will take approximately 10-15 minutes for the change to be reflected in Vista.
  • The current policy (which has been in place since 2002) is that courses stay on the WebCT/Vista server for six months after the end of the semester.  So:
    •  Summer 2005 sections will be removed on or about February 15, 2006,
    •  Fall 2005 sections will be removed on or about June 15, 2006, and
    • Spring 2006 sections will be removed on or about November 2006.
  • Vista looks at a particular class as being semester/term based.  Therefore, we include the semester in the title of each course.  Students who were enrolled in a course in Fall 2005, dropped the class, and then reenrolled in another section in Spring 2006 are most likely going to see both courses listed on their MyWebCT.  The only way to select the correct course is to carefully read the course title, and make sure you select the one for the current semester, i.e., Spring 2006.
  • Courses on MyWebCT may not necessarily appear in alphabetic order.  Here is why.  The order of the courses is based on the underlying Vista database architecture.  What appears on MyWebCT is the list of course sections.  Sections are all associated with a course, i.e., ENGL1108-10 and ENGL1108-12 are both sections of the course ENGL1108.  Courses belong to Groups.  Groups, for Fairmont State, are the various colleges/schools.  So, ENGL1108 belongs to the College of Liberal Arts.  Likewise, EDUC2201-01 and EDUC2201-02 are both sections of the course EDUC2201.  EDUC2201 belongs to the School of Education.  Alphabetically, the School of Education group is after the College of Liberal Arts Group and therefore EDUC2201-01 will appear after ENGL1108-10 even though alphabetically EDUC comes before ENGL.
  • At any given time, faculty and students may have as many as four semester’s worth of courses listed on MyWebCT.  In many cases, dropped classes will also appear.  Information on how WebCT handles dropped course can be found in item #4 in the Faculty FAQ:  /facstaffresources/ltc/faculty_faq.asp

As faculty, you may also wish to share this information with your students.  Advisors may want to remind students that the casual adding and dropping of courses will result in an unusually high number of courses being listed on the student’s MyWebCT page.

As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns.  Thank You.
