Students were recruited from the Early Childhood Development course taught through the Early Childhood Program at Pierpont Community and Technical College. These students then formed a collaboration with Fairmont State University students by extending the opportunity to them to join in with the service learning experience. Eight students participated in this service project and conducted their project in five locations, Elkins, Mannington, Fairmont, Nutterfort, Sun Beam Child Care Center, and the Pierpont Community and Technical College. The students read children one of two books that focused on caring and giving back and conducted a hands-on project with them to reinforce the ideas shared through the story and discussions which followed. Once the hands-on activity was completed, each child received a copy of the book. Hands-on activities included litter pick-up in a community park, beautification of Veteran’s Square flower bed, making greeting cards for the local nursing home and assisted living center, and potting flowers for the senior center clients.
