Pierpont Community & Technical College preschool students have participated in Heifer International for the last eight years. During the month of November 2008, the students collected almost $700 for the non-profit organization.

Heifer International is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to relieving global hunger and poverty. It provides the "gift that keeps on giving" to financially-disadvantaged families around the world. Families are given animals that will provide an on-going income. They are taught how to care for the animals and how to use them in the most beneficial ways. The families agree to give the animal's first healthy off-spring to another family in the community to raise that family's standard of living.

In preparation for the event, the preschoolers studied the different animals given by Heifer International, and a parent meeting was held so the families could be involved in the Heifer study and project.

Wearing animal costumes and singing songs about the animals, the preschoolers visited buildings on the campus where faculty, staff, and students graciously made donations totaling $697.17 in the past.

Because of the success for both the families in need and the preschoolers, the Heifer International project has now become a tradition on campus.
