OVERVIEW OF THE ART PROGRAM

Fairmont State University Art Department offers three options for students seeking degrees in Art.  The Studio Art degree provides for a concentration in a particular studio area.  Art Education prepares students to teach art in public schools.  Graphics/Fine Arts is the degree of choice for students wishing to incorporate art in the fields of communication and commerce.  This two-plus-two program is a collaborative degree with the School of Technology.  All options include foundation studio and art history classes that prepare students for advanced coursework in specific areas or programs.  The Department also provides a minor for the student with an avocational interest in art.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ART MAJORS

Students completing the Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art are those who wish to work as professional artists.  Students in this area may choose to continue their educations at the graduate level, or they may seek gallery representation.  Studio Art majors may also choose to continue in the School of Education to obtain the M.A.T. for teaching certification in the fifth year.  Students completing the B.A. in Art Education will be able to seek employment as art teachers in primary or secondary schools.  Students who seek the Graphics/Fine Arts degree receive a Bachelor of Science degree.  Students who obtain this degree work in fields of communication technology where design is an emphasis.
