OVERVIEW OF EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PROGRAM
Emergency Medical Services plays a key role in the health care delivery system in the United States by providing the appropriate basic, intermediate, and advanced life support to the sick and injured in a prehospital setting. The Emergency Medical Technician is the instrument used to provide this prehospital care. The EMT’s primary responsibility is to provide expert emergency medical care to victims of emergencies and to transport them safely to the proper facility. Most duties are performed unsupervised, in a great variety of circumstances, and often under considerable physical and emotional stress. The actions taken can mean the difference between life and death of the victim.
