Paraprofessional Program Goals

The Paraprofessional Program at Pierpont Community and Technology College of Fairmont State University provides two benchmark opportunities for student achievement. 

  • This program supports the Federal No Child Left Behind legislation stating the need for “highly qualified” teachers aides in the classroom.
  • This program is to prepare students to further their education after completion of the Associate of Arts in Paraeducation to a Bachelor of Arts in Education.

Satisfactory student performance on the direct assessment measure will consist of:

1.  Use effective written and verbal communication.  Written Papers, oral presentations, and group and online discussions Satisfactory student performance must be a minimum of a grade of C or higher  
2. Recognize and identify the Special Education Process and the federal and state guidelines that monitor that process.

 Research, online discussions, interviews with those working in the school system, and formal evaluation

Satisfactory student performance must be a minimum of a grade of C or higher  

 3. Identify and create appropriate techniques for assisting students with learning difficulties.

 Online discussions, research, and role playing situation with children     Satisfactory student performance must be a minimum of a grade of C or higher  
 4. Identify potential employment opportunities and potential income.  Personal interviews with county representatives  Satisfactory student performance must be a minimum of a grade of C or higher
5. Demonstrate knowledge of Special Education terminology. Research and create spreadsheet as reference Satisfactory student performance must be a minimum of a grade of C or higher  
6. Demonstrate knowledge of core issues concerning special education.

 Participation in online discussions concerning key topics in Special Education

7. Identify specific responsibilities outlined for the working Paraprofessional.

 Participation in personal interviews with those working in the field, reports, and online discussions

8. Exhibit competency in the Basic Skills, Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.


Successful completion of English and Mathematics courses as defined by the program requirements/guidelines
