Applied Design Program Goals

Program Outcome Direct assessment measure Satisfactory performance standard

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

Student performance with respect to this outcome will be measured by:

Satisfactory student performance on the direct assessment measure will consist of:

1. Students should have knowledge of design theory and the elements and principles of design.  They will demonstrate this through organizing, manipulating, and solving design problems.  Students will demonstrate principles and elements of design through a series of multiple design projects; both 2-D and 3-D. Students will be able to present design solutions to the class and defend design choices based on a set of pre-determined project goals.  An average grade of C or better (70%) on all projects and assignments.
Successful application of design principles and elements will be demonstrated in original design projects, accompanied with written evidence of design theory and appropriate application. Creativity and originality will be encouraged and recognized.
2. Students should know the history of their field, and understand the materials, components, and products that are associated with that field.

Knowledge of terminology in the field, history, and materials and components will be assessed through written exams and inclusion of this information with presented projects, and in written papers and supporting documents.

An average grade of C or better (70%) on all tests and assignments.
 3. Students should be able to communicate and justify, through oral presentations, the details, inspiration, problems, solutions, and the vision of their design.  Given a variety of design challenges, students will be able to analyze problems and present create design solutions through the manipulation of materials and components. Students will incorporate realistic, functional, and aesthetic solutions appropriate to the field, producing creative and satisfactory design solutions.   An average grade of C or better (70%) on all projects and presentations.
 4. Students should develop demonstrate a work ethic in their field of design through practicum experience and community service.  Students will complete a 160 hour on-the-job work experience, under the supervision of a professional in the field. In addition, students will keep a log of their experiences, prepare a resume, and provide supporting documents.    An average grade of C or better (70%) on all practicum materials, including work experience logs, supporting documents, and port folios.
5. Students should demonstrate an understanding of business practices and consumer marketing principles as related to the products and services of their field.  Knowledge of business practices and consumer marketing principles will be assessed through written exams and inclusion of this information with presented projects, and in written papers and supporting documents.     An average grade of C or better (70%) on all tests, written papers and supporting documents, projects and presentations.
