Future Teachers Academy

The Future Teachers Academy is a four-day program geared to identify and recruit current sophomore and junior and senior-level students into the most needed teaching specialties, e.g., math, science, foreign languages, special education, multi-cultural education, etc.

Students who are selected will live on campus to experience the full day-to-day life of a college student. Although the main objective of the camp is to provide the students with the opportunity to explore the potential of a career in teaching, many other aspects of college life will be introduced.

Approximately 40 – 45 students will be carefully selected by members of the School of Education faculty based upon the applicants’ responses to an essay entitled “Why I Am Interested in Becoming a Teacher.”

Once selected, students will arrive Sunday evening and beginning Monday morning they will spend four intense, but fun-filled, days and evenings dealing with the teaching profession.

  • Day one will overview the entire profession.
  • Day two will look at the process and procedures of becoming a teacher.
  • Days three and four will give the students an opportunity to test their skills by preparing and presenting a lesson. Participants will be paired with Fairmont State education majors who will assist them with the preparation of the lesson.
  • The camp will conclude with a luncheon and an awards ceremony Thursday afternoon. There is no cost to attend.

Fairmont State University is committed to continued excellence in the area of teacher preparation. The Future Teachers Academy is another example of the institution’s dedication to providing young people with an opportunity to excel in the field of education.
