Fairmont State University Forges Successful Collaboration with 


The IBM Academic Initiative is an innovative program that partners colleges and universities around the world to better educate students for a more skilled and competitive IT workforce.

By becoming a member of the Academic Initiative, Fairmont State University has a firsthand view of current IT industry philosophies and trends. Faculty and students who participate in the IBM Academic Initiative have access to courseware and certification training programs based on open standards and IBM proprietary technologies.

Faculty can participate in educational events that show how emerging technologies work and have a front row seat for exciting new directions in software development.

The IBM Academic Initiative builds relationships with a broad spectrum of business and industry, and gains access to mainframe systems for FSU’s faculty and students.

Career Opportunities

All of the top 25 world banks, 71% of global Fortune 500 companies and 9 out of 10 top global life/health insurance providers utilize mainframes and related products.  Most of those companies are working aggressively to ensure access to the talent pool that will replace their rapidly retiring experts. That means students who are part of the Fairmont State University IBM Academic Initiative are highly likely to take those skills right into the workforce upon graduation.

The IBM Academic Initiative has developed a new relationship with ZSkills CORP. ZSkills Corp is a mainframe talent search company with the mission to connect students learning the mainframe skills to mainframe users interested hiring students with entry-level mainframe skills. Several mainframe clients are also interested in students with mainframe skills to fill summer internship positions. There is no fee for students to use ZSkills Corp's services.
