Terry Deremer named men's tennis coach

Fairmont State University alumnus Terry Deremer has taken over as head men's tennis coach, Director of Athletics Chad Fowler announced on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Deremer has been around the game of tennis for over 40 years as a collegiate head coach and tennis professional, most recently serving as Director of Tennis at The Greenbrier Classic prior to his retirement.
 
"It is a privilege to welcome Terry back to Fairmont State to lead our men's tennis program," said Fowler. "We are very fortunate to have an alumnus with as much experience as Terry and we are pleased that he has agreed to return and lead our program.
 
"We have an experienced roster that is coming off an Atlantic Regional appearance a season ago, and I look forward to seeing their improvement under Terry's leadership," Fowler added.
 
Prior to taking over at the Greenbrier, Deremer served as head men's tennis coach at West Virginia University from 1979-1994, where he was a two-time Eastern Collegiate Coach of the Year (1988, 1990) and led the Mountaineers to three-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (1988, 1989, 1990).
 
During his time in Morgantown, Deremer compiled a record of 263-169 (.609) during his 14 seasons at the helm of the program. He coached all three of West Virginia's men's tennis All-Americans, and coached seven players that moved on to have professional careers.
 
Deremer has served as a tennis profession since 1976, and has instructed over 75 juniors players that have moved on to have collegiate careers. He has also had numerous juniors players that have appeared in the national tennis rankings during his career.
 
Deremer received two awards from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) back in 2014, including the Lifetime Service Award, and the West Virginia Section Lifetime Achievement Award.
 
A member of the Fairmont State University Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013, Deremer was a two-time first team All-WVIAC selection and helped lead the Falcons to a 55-24 record and three WVIAC baseball championships (1967, 1968, 1970) during his storied collegiate career on the diamond. The Falcons also made two NAIA National Tournament appearances during Deremer's playing days, including in 1970 when the team had a 19-5 overall record.
 
Following his senior season at Fairmont State, the New York Mets selected Deremer in the 29th round of the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft, where he played three seasons for the organization.
 
Deremer graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education in 1970, and received a Master's of Arts Degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University in 1976. He currently holds affiliations with the USTA and United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).
