FSU Represented at Higher Education Day at the Legislature

Higher Education Day at the Legislature on March 21 was held at the State Capitol to recognize West Virginia’s higher education institutions and to provide information to potential students, policymakers and the general public regarding the postsecondary education opportunities available in West Virginia. 

The annual event is hosted by Dr. Paul Hill, Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission; James Skidmore, Chancellor of the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education; and Ben Exley, IV, Executive Director of the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities Inc.  College and universities hosted displays in the Upper Rotunda of the State Capitol.  Each institution distributed information and have representatives on hand to answer questions.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin presented Hill, Skidmore, Exley and the college and university presidents with a proclamation declaring March 21, 2013, as Higher Education Day. Similar ceremonies occurred in the House Chamber and the Senate Chamber.

In addition to FSU President Maria Rose, students Stacy Schulman, Jessica Nardo and Joshua Miker represented FSU at the event. Also attending on behalf of FSU were Kaye Widney, Vice President for Student Services; Dr. Richard Harvey, Dean of the School of Business; Dr. Anthony Gilberti, Dean of the College of Science and Technology; Amie Fazalare, Director of Recruitment and Admissions; Ann Booth, Director of University Communications; Stephanie McCandless, Retention Program Manager; Charlie Watson of the Office of Retention; Jessica Sharps, Director of Publications; and Amy Pellegrin, Director of Marketing and Branding.

As part of this year’s activities, approximately 150 West Virginia GEAR UP high school students attended.

Participating institutions included: Alderson-Broaddus College, Appalachian Bible College, Bethany College, Bluefield State College, Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, Bridgemont Community and Technical College, Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College, Marshall University, Mountwest Community and Technical College, New River Community and Technical College, Ohio Valley University, Pierpont Community and Technical College, Potomac State College of West Virginia University, Shepherd University, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, University of Charleston, West Liberty University, West Virginia Northern Community College, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, West Virginia State University, West Virginia University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, West Virginia University at Parkersburg, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The Commission’s Division of Science and Research, Division of Student Success and P-20 Initiatives, and West Virginia Network for Educational Telecomputing (WVNET) also had displays.
