Fairmont State University professor named ASCE WV Educator of the Year

Fairmont State University Professor of Engineering Technology, Tia Como, has been named the American Society of Civil Engineers WV Section Educator of the Year. The award is given annually to an ASCE member and educator who has positively impacted the lives of their students inside and outside the classroom.

“I was very surprised,” Como said when she learned she had received the award. “I was speechless, which is very unlike me because I can usually always find something to say.”

The West Virginia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has awarded Fairmont State Engineering Technology faculty, Professor Tabitha Lafferre E.I, the 2020 WV Young Civil Engineer of the Year Award. The award is presented annually to a distinguished civil engineer in the field. Candidates for the nomination must be a registered professional engineer or present evidence of formal intention to become registered.

Fairmont State engineering students will spend the spring semester addressing an ongoing concern in the Tunnelton community—the underpass. The senior capstone course students, under the direction of Professor Tia Como, P.E., will bring practical knowledge into the classroom and partner with area leaders to propose solutions to Tunnelton’s underpass issues.
