Five Students Inducted into English Honor Society
Five Fairmont State University students were inducted into the Beta Omega Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honor Society on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center.
The inductees were Daphne L. Beckwith, Velicia J. Darquenne, Sarah E. Garcia, Kaylee Kirkpatrick and Grace Y. Templeman.
To qualify for this honor, students must be nominated by an English faculty member, then meet rigorous standards of academic excellence, including grade point average and satisfactory progress towards the degree.
Beckwith, from Montrose, is an English major with a minor in Business and Technical Writing; Darquenne, an English major and Journalism minor, is a native of Clarksburg. A native of Philippi,Garcia is majoring in English Education with a secondary concentration in Library Science. Kirkpatrick of Fairmont and Templeman of Bridgeport are also English Education majors.
“Membership in Sigma Tau Delta can open many professional doors, both inside and outside of the academy. We are lucky to have students talented enough to qualify,” said Dr. James Matthews, faculty sponsor of the Beta Omega chapter.
Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1924 to confer distinction for high achievement in the English language, literature and writing and to foster literacy and other aspects of the discipline of English. The Beta Omega chapter was organized in 1956.
