Nursing Check Procedure

 

To ensure that your laptop is ready to use for School of Nursing online testing, please follow the instructions below. For HESI testing prep, follow this link and complete the HESI Compatibility Check for Labs. If your device doesn't pass the compatibility check, there will be links provided for each failed checklist item. Follow the appropriate links to learn how to resolve the issues flagged for your device. Once you take the recommended steps, run the compatibility check again.


For all machines:

  • Ensure that the laptop will connect to Student wifi – instructions can be found in our FAQs.
  • Install Respondus Lockdown Browser or check for updates if it is already installed (Click on the “I” in the top left after starting LDB to check for updates.) The link for Respondus Lockdown Browser can be found on our Supported Technology webpage.
  • Check/adjust power settings to prevent the laptop from entering sleep mode during a test. Use your device's search function to locate Power Settings.
    • Windows 8 and older: Power Settings are generally located in the Control Panel. Edit your settings so your computer or screen doesn't go to sleep if you leave it idle for less than an hour (recommended).
    • Windows 10: look for "Edit Power Plan" or "Power and Sleep Settings", click Open, and edit the settings so your computer or screen doesn't go to sleep if you leave it idle for less than an hour (recommended).
    • Macbooks: click on the Apple icon and select System Preferences. Select Energy Saver and adjust the settings to prevent the screen or the device from going to sleep within an hour of idle time (recommended).
  • If you are concerned that your computer may have malware, install Malwarebytes (free download) and run a scan. Click below to be taken to the Malwarebytes (external) website:

For Windows computers only:

  • Disable Windows auto-updates before you start your test (not available for Windows 10). Be sure to re-enable them after your test is completed.
  • Verify that the current version of Java is installed: Click here to be taken to the Java (external) website.
  • Verify that the laptop has an active antivirus program. If the laptop does not have an active antivirus:
    • For Windows 7
      • Verify that Microsoft Security Essentials is active (use the search function on your laptop to locate it).
      • Run a Microsoft Security Essentials quick scan if you are concerned with the functionality of your device.
    • For Windows 8 or 10
      • Verify that Windows Defender is active (use the search function on your laptop to locate it).
      • Run a Windows Defender quick scan if you are concerned with the functionality of your device.

Respondus Lockdown Browser is now available for Chromebooks:

Instructors/Teachers

During the beta period, instructors will need to enable the use of the Chromebook version on a per exam basis.

  • Go to the LockDown Browser Dashboard within Blackboard Learn
  • Select “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam”
  • Expand “Advanced Settings” and select “Allow students to use LockDown Browser for Chromebook (beta)”
  • Save the exam settings for LockDown Browser            

Students

Installing the LockDown Browser to a Chromebook is easy. 

  • Log in to the Chromebook and start Google Chrome
  • Go to the download link for LockDown Browser (this link is unique to each institution); you will automatically be redirected to the Chrome Web Store.
  • From the Chrome Web Store, select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension
  • Log into Blackboard Learn and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser
  • The LockDown Browser extension will be started automatically when an assessment requires it

Note: During the beta, this extension will only work with assessments an instructor has enabled for use with LockDown Browser for Chromebook

*Remember to update & restart your computer the morning before the test, allowing time to work through any issues. Make sure you can load Lockdown Browser before test time, and that you are able to access the Blackboard login screen from within it.

Please be aware that you will be asked to fill out a personal property release form in order to leave your laptop with us until we are able to work on it. If it is inconvenient for you to leave your device with us for up to 24 hours, depending on our workload, please plan to bring it in at another time when you are able to do so.
