What is a Fairmont State account?

A Fairmont State account (UCA) is a unique username and password combination that allows you to access services at Fairmont State.

What is my UCA?

Your UCA will be based off your name. Typically, the first letter of your first name and your last name. It can also include a number.

Ex:
Name - Freddie Falcon
UCA - ffalcon1

How do I activate my Fairmont State account?

  1. Navigate to the UCA activation page.
  2. Enter your Social Security number or student ID in the first text field.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Follow the instructions listed.
    • (Hint: The answer to your security question and password are case-sensitive.)
  5. Click Activate my UCA once you have completed the fields within the form.
    • (Note: Your account will take 15-20 minutes to activate.)

Once your UCA is activated, the username cannot be changed, even if your name changed. If you notice a misspelling or mistake in your UCA please discontinue the activation process and contact Tech Commons via telephone 304-367-4810, email at help@fairmontstate.edu or in person at 139 Ruth Ann Musick Library.

How do I change my account password?

Changing your UCA password can be done online.

Note: Once your password has changed it may take 10-15 minutes for your creditials to update on campus computers and networks.

How do I change my security question and answer?

In order to change your Security Question and Answer please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to myFairmontState.
  2. Click on the FELiX icon.
  3. Once FELiX loads, select the Personal Information tab.
  4. Click "Change Security Question".
  5. Follow the directions listed.
  6. The answers are case sensitive. Answers must match exactly when changing a password.
  7. Click Submit.

If you are unable to log in to myFairmontState but need to change your security question and response, please contact the Information Technology Commons at 304-367-4810 or come to our office in room 139 of the Ruth Ann Musick Library.

How do I sign up for emergency notifications?

Emergency Notification Setup:

To sign up for Emergency Notifications, log in to myFairmontstate.

Click on the Emergency Notification icon.

If you are not yet enrolled, this will enroll you and allows you to input your contact information.

If you are already enrolled, clicking on the Emergency Notification icon will allow you to edit your emergency notification settings and contact information.

Configuring Notification Preferences:

To add or edit your phone number(s) click on Update in the Phones section.

To add or edit your email address(es) click on Update in the Emails section.

Be sure to click Save when you're done entering your contact information.

Networking

How do I connect to wireless Student Network

  1. Choose Student from your device’s wireless options.
  2. Enter in your UCA (Username):
    • Apple & Windows Devices: username@students and password.
    • Android & ChromeOS: students\username and password.
      • ​Under Advanced settings enter:
        • EAP Method: PEAP
        • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
        •  ​​Certificate: select "Do not check" or "Don't validate

How do I connect to wireless Staff Network

  1. Choose Staff from your device’s wireless options.
  2. Enter your UCA username and UCA password.
    • Example: Username: jdoe Password: UCA Password

How do I connect to wireless Residence Hall Network

Student Housing offers students a personalized private wireless network. This enables the use of Gaming Consoles, Streaming Devices, and most other smart devices in the Residence Halls.

Onboarding and Connecting for Res_Hall Network:

  1. Connect to the “Student_Onboarding” wireless network.
  2. At the ExtremeCloud IQ Secure Internet Portal, log in with your Fairmont State UCA and Password.
    • Example students\jdoe
  3. A Pre-shared Key (password) for Res_Hall will be assigned.
    • Note: Write down or take note of your pre-shared key.
  4. Close this wireless connection
  5. Connect to the “Res_Hall” wireless network.
  6. Enter the Pre-shared key (password) from step 2.  A username is not required.
    • Note: Forget the “Student_Onboarding” network to keep from connecting to it in the future.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for all devices you desire to connect.

How do I connect Gaming Systems to Res_Hall

  1. Follow the steps listed in "Connecting to Residence Hall Network" above.
  2. Ensure the gaming system is plugged into the networking port, and leave it plugged in until a connection is made. 

How do I connect to wireless Guest Network

  1. Choose Guest from your device’s wireless options.
  2. Open a new browser window (try Internet Explorer or Google Chrome) and enter a valid email address in the Email field on the authentication page.

How do I connect my Android device or Chromebook to campus networks?

To connect to the Fairmont State campus wireless network with an Android and ChromeOS devices, please follow the steps below:

Android Device:

Note: Menu options and network settings may vary, depending upon type of device and software version.

  1. Go to Settings (the Gear menu).
  2. Select Wireless and Network settings.
  3. Click on Wi-Fi and toggle the button to turn it on.
  4. Choose either Student, Staff, Res_Hall or Guest depending on the network you wish to connect to.
  5. Edit the settings (you may need to click Advanced Settings) to match the following:
    • EAP Method: PEAP
    • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
    • Certificate: select "Do not check" or "Don't validate"
    • Identity: Input your Fairmont State account username.
      • Students please enter students\username.
    • Anonymous id: leave this space blank
    • Password: Fairmont State account password
  6. Once you have filled in all of the fields listed above, click Connect

ChromeOS:

  1. At the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Not Connected 
    • Note: If you see your Wi-Fi network name and a signal strength, your Chromebook is already connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi. 
  4. Your Chromebook will automatically look for available networks and show them to you in a list.
  5. Choose either Student, Staff, Res_Hall or Guest depending on the network you wish to connect to.
  6. When join network appears make sure the settings match the inputs below:
    • EAP method: PEAP
    • EAP Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Domain: fairmontstate.edu
    • Identity: Input your Fairmont State account username.
      • Students please enter students\username.
    • Password: Fairmont State account Password
  7. Click Connect

How do I connect my iPad, iPhone, or Macbook to campus networks?

To connect to the Fairmont State campus wireless network with an Apple device, please follow the steps below:

iOS (iPhone) and iPadOS Devices

Note: Menu options and network settings may vary, depending upon type of device and software version.

  1. Open Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Click on Wi-Fi and toggle the button to turn it on.
  3. Choose either Student, Staff, Res_Hall or Guest depending on the network you wish to connect to.
  4. Input your Fairmont State account username.
    • Students please enter students\username.
  5. Enter your Fairmont State account password in the second field.
  6. Click Connect.​
    • If prompted to accept a certificate, accept it. If you are using a macbook, you may also be prompted to enter your admin credentials.

macOS Devices

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
  2. Choose either Student, Staff, Res_Hall or Guest depending on the network you wish to connect to.
  3. Input your Fairmont State account username.​

How do I connect my Windows device to campus networks?

  5. Enter your Fairmont State account password in the second field.

Email

How do I access my Fairmont State student email account?

To access to your Fairmont State student email, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Fairmont State University home page.
  2. Click on Quick Links and select myFairmontState from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on Returning Users to be taken to the myFairmontState login page.
  4. Log in using your Fairmont State account username (not your full email address) and your password.
  5. Once you are logged in to myFairmontState, click on the Webmail icon, which should take you to an external Office 365 login screen. If you are already logged in to your personal Office 365 account, be sure to sign out of it and restart your browser before you attempt the next step.
  6. Click on your account to get to the Fairmont State sign-in screen. If you don't see it listed, you may need to click "Use another account", type in your full student email address (yourusername @students.fairmontstate.edu) then hit tab or enter to be redirected.
  7. Log in again on the Fairmont State sign-in screen using your Fairmont State account username and password.
  8. If you don't see your email box immediately, you may need to click on the App Launcher (waffle button), located next to the Office 365 logo in the top left, then click on the Mail application. You may also be asked to choose a language and a time zone.

If you are unable to log in to myFairmontState or you can log in to myFairmontState but cannot access your email, contact the Information Technology Commons at 304-367-4810, email us at help@fairmontstate.edu using your personal email account, or come to our office in room 139 of the library for assistance.

How do I forward my Fairmont State email to my personal email account?

  1. First, go to the Fairmont State Portal at my.fairmontstate.edu, and click on "Returning Users Login".
  2. Log in using your Fairmont State account username and password.
  3. Click on the Webmail icon in the Applications box.
  4. Enter your student email address and click Next.
  5. Sign in with your email address and password.
  6. Click "Outlook" in the Apps box.
  7. Go to your mailbox and click the settings icon which looks like a gear.
  8. In the Settings search box type “forwarding”.
  9. Click on Forwarding.
  10. Enter the email address you would like to forward emails to and click save.

Now emails sent to your Fairmont State address will be forwarded to your alternate email.

How do I set up my Fairmont State email account on an Android mobile device?

These instructions are for use with Fairmont State Office 365 accounts. If you have any trouble configuring your phone, please contact the HelpDesk at 304-367-4810 or visit the Tech Commons in room 139 of the Ruth Ann Musick Library.

Note: Due to the multiple versions of Android OS, these instructions may not apply exactly for your Android device. However, the server and account information should still allow you to successfully configure your account.

  1. From your phone's home screen, launch the application list and choose Settings.
  2. Select Accounts & Sync.
  3. Select the Add Account button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Select Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync as the Account Type (some devices call this account type "ActiveSync", "Work", or "Corporate")
  5. Enter your email address (Students: yourusername@students.fairmontstate.edu | Staff/Faculty: yourusername@fairmontstate.edu) and password.
    • Most devices will make you manually setup at this point. If so:
  6. For the Exchange/OWA Server, enter outlook.office365.com
  7. If there is a field that says Domain\Username, enter the domain, followed by your full email address (Students: students\yourusername@students.fairmontstate.edu | Staff/Faculty: fairmontstate\yourusername@fairmontstate.edu)
  8. In the username and password field, use the following:
  9. Select Next and choose the synchronization options for your account. When you are done, choose Finish to complete account creation.

 

How do I set up my Fairmont State email account on an Apple mobile device?

These instructions are for use with Fairmont State Office 365 accounts. If you have any trouble configuring your phone, please contact the HelpDesk at 304-367-4810 or visit the Tech Commons in room 139 of the Ruth Ann Musick Library.

  3. Click Add Account
  4. Select Exchange Account
  5. Type in your email address and click Next
  6. Select Sign In from the popup box
  7. Enter in your Password
  8. Server: outlook.office365.com
  9. Domain: students\email address
  10. User: email address
  11. Click Save

Printing

I want to print on campus; how do I use a network printer?

Fairmont State Xerox machines are now set up to allow printing from personal devices such as laptops or cell phones. Students wishing to print to a campus Xerox printer will find instructions for doing so on the ID Card Printing Page. You must have sufficient Falcon Dollars in your Fairmont State account in order to print.

If you need to print from a campus computer, you can still do so. Documents can also be accessed and printed from campus lab computers if you have saved your work in your OneDrive or on a flash drive, or if you are printing something from a website. You can also email a document to yourself, then access your email on a lab computer to print the attachment. Your account will be charged immediately for any printing.

If you are an employee trying to print from a campus computer and can't or don't see the correct (nearest) printer when you try to print your document, please follow the instructions below or contact the help desk at 304-367-4810.

Faculty/Staff Printing Instructions:

Why can't I print to my network printer?

1. Restart your computer. This will re-establish a connection to the network and authenticate you as a user.
2. If you still cannot print, re-install the driver for your printer. See "How do I connect to a networked printer" instructions below.

How do I connect to a networked printer?
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type \\fsps1
  4. Click Ok.
  5. Find the name of the printer you want to add (hover cursor over the printer name to view building/room code and primary department).
  6. Double click the printer to install the driver on your computer.
How do I remove or delete my current printer driver?
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Printers.
  3. Locate and right click the driver.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Click Yes.
How do I view networked printer drivers?
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type \\fsps1
  4. Click OK.

What do I do if my local printer is not printing?

  1. Restart your computer. Occasionally, your local printer will lose connection to your computer.
  2. Shut down the printer. Wait 15 seconds. Turn the printer back on.
  3. Make sure all cables from the printer to the computer are secure.

Miscellaneous

How do I back up the user profile content on my office computer?

Backing up User Profiles for Windows 7

  1. Go to the OneDrive website and download OneDrive.
  2. Click Save on the yellow and white bar that pops up on the bottom of your screen.
  3. Click the Windows Icon in the bottom left, then click on Downloads.
  4. Double-click on OneDriveSetup.exe, then click Run on the Security Warning prompt.
  5. When you see the prompt to sign in, type in your username@fairmontstate.edu email, then hit enter. A smaller Windows Security box will pop up.
  6. In the small window, check the box that says “Remember my credentials” and type in your Fairmont State account username and password in the boxes. Click OK.
  7. Click Next on the following screens until you see Open my OneDrive – Fairmont State University folder. Click here to open.
  8. Click the Windows Icon on the bottom left again, then click on your name or username located in the right-side column of the menu.
  9. You should now be able to copy/drag the folders you want to keep into the “OneDrive – Fairmont State University” folder located here. Most commonly, you will want to keep Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Pictures, Searches, and Videos.

How do I connect remotely through the employee VPN?

Employees of Fairmont State University can use AnyConnect to work remotely through VPN (virtual private network) when necessary to complete their work. Instructions for installation and use are below.

Installing AnyConnect Client

  • Windows & MacOS: Visit fsuvpn.fairmontstate.edu off campus
  • iPadOS: Search App Store or Click Here.
  • ChromeOS: Search Chrome Web Store or Click Here.

Installing Microsoft Remote Desktop (macOS, iPadOS, and ChromeOS)

  • Windows: Windows includes "Remote Desktop Connection" and does not require a download of the Microsoft Remote Desktop application. 
  • MacOS & iPadOS: Search App Store or Click Here.
  • ChromeOS: Search Play Store or Click Here.

Windows How-to Remote Connect

  1. Open Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
    • Please Note: If you do not have the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, see the section above "Installing AnyConnect Client".
  2. Enter fsuvpn.fairmontstate.edu Click Connect
  3. In the Group field select Employees, and enter your UCA and Password, Click Ok.
  4. Open Remote Desktop Connection (Start > Windows Accessories > Remote Desktop Connection or search “Remote Desktop Connection”) and in the Computer Field enter the name of computer you are connecting to.
  5. Click Connect. (A warning may appear that says "The identity of this computer cannot be verified. Do you want to connect anyway?" Click yes.

You can select the option "Don't ask me again for connections to this computer" to prevent seeing this notification again.)

macOS How-to Remote Connect

  1. Open Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client

  3. Return to main area of app. Toggle the AnyConnect VPN switch. In the Group field select Employees, enter your UCA and Password, click Connect
  4. Open Microsoft Remote Desktop.

How do I map a network drive?

  1. If using a Windows 10 device, double-click This PC on your desktop or use the search bar to locate it. If using a Windows 7 device, click on the Windows icon in the bottom-left part of the screen, then click Computer on the right-hand side of the menu that pops up.
  2. For Windows 10, click on the Computer tab by the blue File button in the top-left of the window that opens up. Then click Map Network Drive.
    ​For Windows 7, click on Map Network Drive on the top row of options on the new window.   
  3. You may be familiar with a drive set to a default of “M:” “V:” or “Z:” but you can set your network drive to any available letter with which you feel most comfortable.
  4. Enter your department's network share path (listed below) in the Folder section.
    • Most Department Network Shared Drives (M:) \\pftfs002.fairmontstate.edu\Data
    • Science & Math Data Share (V:) \\fsuscimath.fairmontstate.edu\scimath$
    • Nursing Data Share (V:) \\pftfs002.fairmontstate.edu\nursingdata$
    • Employee Personal Data Drive (U:) \\fsuemphd.fairmontstate.edu\Users\yourusername
  5. Ensure that Reconnect at sign-in is checked and click Finish.

How do I use my Cisco IP Phone?

Fairmont State University uses Voice over IP technology for their phone system. The voice mail system is known as Unity. Please dial 8 before the area code and number in order to make an outside call. On-campus calls can be made simply by dialing the 4 digit extension. Please see below for instructions for using other features of the Cisco IP phones available in classrooms and offices on campus.

How do I check my voice mail using my Cisco IP phone?

  1. Press the messages button (it looks like an envelope) or dial 3000.
  2. When prompted, enter your password (4-6 digit pin number), followed by the pound sign.
  3. Follow directions to check your voice mail.

How do I check my voice mail from someone else’s Cisco IP phone?

  1. Press the messages button (envelope) or dial 3000.
  2. When prompted to enter your password, press * (star). You will then be prompted to enter your ID.
  3. Enter the extension number of the phone you wish to check messages for, then press # (pound).
  4. Enter the password (pin) for the phone you wish to check messages for, then press # (pound) again.
  5. Follow the directions to check your voice mail.

How do I check my voice mail from off campus?

  1. Call your office phone number.
  2. When your recorded voice mail greeting begins, press * (star).
  3. You will be prompted to enter your ID. Enter your 4 digit extension and press # (pound).
  4. You will be prompted to enter your password (pin).  Enter your pin and press # (pound).
  5. You will be prompted, “To leave a message for… press 1”. Wait for the next option.
  6. You will be prompted, “To access your mailbox, press 2”. Press 2.

How do I transfer a call using a Cisco IP phone?

  1. While on a call, press the transfer button. This will be a soft key (a changeable key used for multiple on-screen options), which varies between phone models.
  2. Enter the number you want to transfer calls to.
  3. When the line starts to ring, press transfer again to send the call through.
  4. For an open transfer, hold on the line until the person you are transferring the call to picks up, so you can speak to them before completing the transfer.

How do I forward calls using a Cisco IP phone?

To begin transferring calls:

  1. Press CFwdALL (Call Forward All) button.
  2. Enter the extension number to which you want to forward calls.
  3. To forward calls to an off-campus number, dial 8 and then enter the 10-digit phone number.

To turn off call forwarding, press CFwdALL (Call Forward All) button to cancel the forward.

How do I set up or change the voice mail greeting on a Cisco IP phone?

  1. Press the messages button.
  2. Enter voice mail password (pin).
  3. Press 4, then 1 for greetings.
  4. Follow instructions.

How do I set up or change the identification recording when using a Cisco IP phone?

  1. Press the messages button.
  2. Enter voice mail password (pin).
  3. Press 4, then 3 for personal settings.
  4. Press 2 to record identification.
  5. Follow instructions.

How do I set up or change the voice mail password for a Cisco IP phone?

  1. Press the messages button.
  2. Enter the current voice mail password (pin).
  3. Press 4, then 3 for personal settings.
  4. Press 1 to change voice mail password.
  5. Follow instructions.

How do I bounce (reset*) my IP phone?

  1. Press the Settings button (globe or gear).
  2. Quickly press * * # * * (star, star, pound, star, star)
  3. If you lost connection to your phone, the computer connected to your phone, or both, unplug any and all cables or wires from the back of the phone and plug them back in.

*This will cause the phone to cycle and look for a connection. This step is very similar to restarting a computer.

How do I use my Cisco phone to make a conference call?

Follow these steps to make a conference call from a campus phone:

  1. Make the call to the first person and wait for that call to be connected.
  2. Hit the More soft key.
  3. Press Confrn soft key.
  4. Enter second person’s phone number.
  5. Speak to new participant.
  6. Enter More and Confrn again.
  7. Person is now added to conference call.
  8. Repeat steps 2 through 6 for each additional person you need to add to the call.

Please note: The More button doesn’t appear until you’ve made the first call. It will be on the phone screen where redial, new call, and cfwdall show when the phone isn’t in use.

How do I use multimedia room audio/visual equipment?

MMA (Multimedia room A) Instructions:

To put the projector screen down and turn the projector on, hit the power button on the black box on top of the podium.

To raise the screen back up and turn the projector off, hit the power button again.

MMB (Multimedia room B) Instructions:

To lower the projector, use the white panel located in the cubby to the left of the computer. This panel will have an up and down arrow to raise and lower the screen.

To turn the projector on, you will use the “Power On” and “Power Off” buttons on the long black box on the shelf in the cubby.

Please log out of the computer, turn off the projector, and raise the projector screen when you are finished using it. If you need any help with the projector, screen, or computer in either of these rooms, please stop by the library circulation desk or the Tech Commons for assistance.

I have old courses in my Blackboard course list, how do I view only the courses I'm currently teaching?

You use the same steps to hide a course from the Courses tab or from the My Courses module on the My Institution tab.

  1. Select the Manage icon that appears when you point to the module.
  2. On the Personalize: My Courses page, locate the row for the course you want to hide and clear the check box in the Course Name column.
  3. Be sure all check marks are cleared in that course's row.
  4. Repeat for any courses you want to hide.
  5. Select Submit.

What do I do if my computer or monitor won't turn on?

  1. Check to make sure all power cords are plugged in.
  2. Make sure all cords connecting the monitor to the tower are plugged in tight.
  3. If all cords are plugged in tight and that does not fix the problem call the Tech Commons at 304-367-4810.

What do I do if my wireless mouse or keyboard stop working?

Try these simple fixes below:

  • Make sure the wireless receiver for the device is plugged into the computer.
  • Most wireless devices have a reset button. Locate the reset button and press it.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Make sure there are fresh batteries in the device.

What operating system am I running?

For Windows users:

  1. Wait for your computer to load the Desktop.
  2. Right-click on My Computer shortcut on your desktop. If it's not there, Open Windows/File Explorer (Shortcut: WIN+E) and then right-click on My Computer. 
  3. Click Properties from the drop-down menu.
  4. Your Operating System and other System Information will be listed here.

For Mac users:

  1. Click the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. In the Apple menu click "About this Mac" or "About this Computer".

Why can't I log in to a computer on campus?

If you are a faculty or staff member you will use the FAIRMONTSTATE domain to log onto computers. If the computer you are trying to log onto is set up to log onto the STUDENTS domain you must enter fairmontstate\yourusername in the username field.

If you are a student you will use the STUDENTS domain to log onto computers. If the computer you are trying to log onto is set up to log onto the FAIRMONTSTATE domain you must enter students\yourusername in the username field.
