Language and Literature Announces Summer Research Fellows

Six students majoring in English and English Education have won departmental research fellowships this summer, according to Dr. M. Angela Schwer, chair of the Department of Language and Literature.  The six are Chelsi L. Latocha, Laura E. Morris, Lily M. Peterson, Joyanna N. Poe, Veronica Grace Ryan, and Thomas J. White.

The Fairmont State University College of Liberal Arts honored its high achieving students during the seventh annual Academic Awards Ceremony at the end of the spring 2017 semester.

Dr. Deanna Shields, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts; Dr. Maria Rose, FSU President; and RJ Gimbl, President of the Fairmont State Foundation, presented greetings and congratulations to the students for their academic achievements.

Outstanding Faculty Members Honored for Achievement

Fairmont State University’s outstanding faculty members were recognized on Wednesday, April 19, during the Recognition of Faculty Achievement luncheon for their exemplary efforts throughout the 2016-2017 academic year.

The event was hosted by the Faculty Development Committee, the Office of Academic Affairs and the Fairmont State Foundation. Funding for the awards and grants is provided by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Fairmont State Foundation.

FSU to Celebrate 148th Commencement on May 13

More than 400 students will participate in the 148th Commencement for Fairmont State University at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the Feaster Center.

Dr. Maria C. Rose, FSU President, will present special remarks for the ceremony, which will mark her last as president; she will retire when her contract ends on June 30.  Julian Pecora of Clarksburg will be the student speaker representing the Class of 2017.

Model UN Team Places Second in National Competition

Fairmont State University’s Model United Nations team recently placed second as a Distinguished Delegation at the National Model United Nations Conference.

The Model UN team was first established on campus three years ago with the help of current advisor Dr. William Harrison, Assistant Professor of Political Science. This was the third year the team attended the national conference in New York City. Last year, the team placed third as an Honorable Mention Delegation.

Three FSU Students Participate in Frasure-Singleton Internship

Three Fairmont State University students spent the week of spring break in March interning with the West Virginia Legislature in Charleston.         

Emily Markham of Clarksburg, Alex Vance of Ashford and Larry Ross of Bridgeport were selected to participate in the Frasure-Singleton Internship program. Dr. William Harrison, Assistant Professor of Political Science, is the current faculty contact on campus for the program. There were 51 positions available to undergraduate students.

Criminal Justice Students Take Top Honors in National Competition

Fairmont State University Criminal Justice students recently took top honors at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences/Alpha Phi Sigma National Conference in Kansas City, Mo. In fact, Fairmont State will be known as the Alpha Phi Sigma National Office for the next two years because three FSU students won the national election for the presidential slate of the organization and will serve a two-year term as its national officers.

Kestrel Celebration of Issue 36 to Feature Visiting Writers

Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art and the Fairmont State University Department of Language and Literature will host a two-day Celebration of Issue 36 featuring nine Kestrel writers on March 31 and April 1.

Events will be located in Jaynes Hall and the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center on the FSU campus and at the community coffeehouse, Joe ‘n Throw, 323 ½ Adams St., Fairmont.

On March 31 through April 1, 2017, approximately 950 registered participants will be arriving on campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical College to take part in the 52nd Annual SkillsUSA West Virginia State Leadership and Skills Conference.
