During a ceremony on Thursday, April 27, Fairmont State University awarded Maestro Grant Cooper, Conductor and Artistic Director of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra since 2001, an honorary Doctor of Letters degree, the University’s highest honor.

The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO) is taking its spring symphonic concert on the road to Fairmont State University on April 27.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Colebank Hall at FSU and is made possible through generous support from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, National Endowment for the Arts, Bernard H. & Blanche E. Jacobson Foundation, Daywood Foundation, First Energy Foundation and Herscher Foundation.

Moving an entire orchestra is not an easy task, but the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra has been accomplishing this task since 2001, when the orchestra first began traveling to Fairmont. Since then, the WVSO has been creating a lasting impact on Fairmont State University’s campus and in the community as a result of a very collaborative partnership.

The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Grant Cooper performs the second concert of its 2014-2015 season, “Celebrating Lyricism,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Colebank Hall at Fairmont State University.

WVSO Recognizes FSU Department of Music as SCALE Partner

During two recent performances in Morgantown, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra recognized Fairmont State University as a Student-Centered Arts Learning (SCALE) partner.

The Orchestra’s SCALE program links music and other disciplines, such as math, science, writing and art, using the music of the Young People’s Concert as a thematic guide. The program is correlated with West Virginia’s Content Standards and Objectives for elementary classrooms.

Under the direction of Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform at Fairmont State University at 7:30 pm Thursday, Oct. 17, at Colebank Hall.

Containing works by Claude Debussy, Stephen Paulus, Aaron Copland and Grant Cooper, the program will feature two trumpet soloists, Vincent DiMartino and Rex Richardson. The program will include Debussy’s “Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun” and Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.”
