Representatives from the Fairmont State University Tulasi & Marilyn Joshi Office for Educational Pathways for International Centers and Students (EPICS) are looking ahead to resume both on campus intercultural and international activities after a temporary pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Students travel to Athens for spring break

Twelve Honors students and English majors spent spring break in Athens as part of a study tour, according to Dr. Matthew Hokom, who led the trip.

The students spent the first eight weeks of the term, learning about the rich history and cultural importance of Athens in a course taught by Dr. Hokom.  They investigated the achievements of classical Greece, as well as modern authors, contemporary politics, and Greek cuisine.

Freeman scholar to study in Japan

Vanessa Hilton has been awarded a $7,000 Freeman Asia Scholarship to study at Akita International University in Akita, Japan, during spring and fall 2018 semesters.  The sophomore English major is minoring in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She plans a career in teaching English abroad.

International Photography Contest Winners Announced

The Fairmont State University Department of Language and Literature has announced winners of its International Photography Contest.

First-place winners are Kevin Rucker and Megha Basnet, and second-place winners are Kevin McGrath and Deewa Adhikari. First-place prizes were $100, and second-place prizes were $50. The winning photos were taken in Paris, Macedonia and Nepal.

Deciding to participate in Fairmont State University's Italian Exchange Program (UNICAL) was far easier than actually making the first-time trip 5,000 miles from home in Marion County, WV.  Lindsay Menas, an English major, will spend one year studying at the University of Calabria-Consenza. Through e-mails, blogs and Skype communication, she describes many of her opportunities as first-time-in-her-life experiences.

Fairmont State University senior Alicia Nieman received a $2,500 study abroad scholarship from the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. Nieman is the first Fairmont State University student in recent history to receive the scholarship and spent five weeks this summer in South Africa.

A few years ago, Anup Poudel could not have imagined his higher education journey from Nepal to the United States. Born in Kathmandu, a city of nearly a million people, his familiar surroundings included structures obstructing the views and streets filled with cars. The rolling hills and winding roads of West Virginia were very unfamiliar on his drive from a local airport to his future home, the Fairmont State University campus.

Fundraiser to Support Students' Study in Italy

 The Calabria-West Virginia Italian Heritage Association will sponsor a fundraiser this weekend to support students wishing to study at the University of Calabria in Italy. 

The event, which will be held in conjunction with the annual West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival, will recognize the contribution to life in the state and beyond by a successful Italian-American, and encourage further exchange of students between Calabria and Fairmont.
