The Fairmont State University Marching Band Stadium Review Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Colebank Hall Gym. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

During November, the Fairmont community will have the opportunity to experience a timeless story with a twist, as the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and Masquers theatre group present “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder.

The Fairmont State Collegiate Singers and the Fairmont State Chamber Choir will present a concert titled “Frankenstein, Frank N. Furter and Friends” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the Wallman Hall Theatre.

Directed by Dr. Sam Spears with John Morrison as accompanist, the concert ties into the celebration of Halloween and the 2012-2013 Fairmont State University Common Reader project.

As Nick Fantasia, President of the Fairmont State Alumni Association, finished his greetings during the Inauguration of President Maria C. Rose, a young man dressed in a tuxedo stands from behind the orchestra. As the musicians lift their instruments and the first notes are played, the young man stretches, yawns, and begins walking forward. What happens next is astonishing to all in attendance.

The Office of Admissions & Recruitment invites prospective students and families to explore their options at Fairmont State University. On select days throughout the regular semester, academic-based Exploration Days will be held on the main campus in Fairmont, W.Va.

The following dates are scheduled as Exploration Days: Jan. 24 and 25, Feb. 15 and April 19 in 2013.

Fairmont State University Music majors had a special opportunity to learn firsthand from Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Cooper met with students during a Music Appreciation class from 9 to 9:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in Wallman Hall Room 236.

Fans of the Fighting Falcons are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the first home football game on Saturday, Sept. 22, to support a new campus food bank called The Nest. Community members who bring a food item will receive free admission to the game, courtesy of the FSU Department of Athletics.

The Nest is being created to assist students at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

Although Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” was first published in 1818 when she was 21, the novel’s content remains relevant to audiences today. For that reason, “Frankenstein” has been chosen as the Common Reader for the 2012-2013 academic year at Fairmont State University. The project will be complemented by a Frankenstein Film Festival and other events throughout the year.

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and the Masquers theatre group will present the first theatre performance of the academic year in September. “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a new musical comedy, opens Friday, Sept. 21, on the Wallman Hall Stage.                                                                                     

Under the direction of Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform at Fairmont State University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20.

Containing works by Benjamin Britten, Dmitri Shostakovich and Edvard Grieg, the program in Colebank Hall also will feature pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi.
