West Virginia Symphony Orchestra on Campus on Oct. 17

Under the direction of Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform at Fairmont State University at 7:30 pm Thursday, Oct. 17, at Colebank Hall.

Containing works by Claude Debussy, Stephen Paulus, Aaron Copland and Grant Cooper, the program will feature two trumpet soloists, Vincent DiMartino and Rex Richardson. The program will include Debussy’s “Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun” and Copland’s “Appalachian Spring.”

Department of Music Presented Performance of 4'33"

The Fairmont State University Marching Band, Collegiate Singers and Chamber Choir combined on Thursday, Sept. 5, for a campus performance of 4’33” by John Cage.

Sept. 5 was the anniversary of Cage's birth in 1912. Cage's work, which premiered in 1952, is sometimes hailed as one of the significant musical works of the last century.

As part of Fairmont’s celebration of West Virginia’s 150th birthday on June 20, Fairmont State University Academy for the Arts Music Preparatory Department students sang “The West Virginia Hills” and provided solo entertainment at Veterans Square.

Music Department to Present Three Spring Concerts

The Department of Music of the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts will offer three concerts at the end of the spring 2013 semester.

On April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Wallman Hall Room 229, the FSU New Music Students Ensemble, as well as guest performers, directed by Dr. Daniel Eichenbaum, will perform original works composed during the spring semester. The concert will conclude with a new work written on newly designed instruments from the course.

Spring Music Gala Highlights Students and West Virginia Folklore

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts Department of Music celebrates the spirit of musical connection with its Spring Music Gala at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, in Colebank Hall.

Admission is free to the performance with a donation to The Soup Opera. Representatives will be at the concert to collect canned goods and other donations. For more information, call (304) 367-4219.

Department of Music Hosts Two Senior Recitals

During the month of April, the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts Department of Music will host two Senior Recitals. 

At 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, senior Cecil Lopez, saxophone, accompanied by John Morrison, will be performing with special guest Elizabeth Bertovich, marimba. Lopez is a student of Randall Hall. 

Saxophone Ensemble Offers April 23 Concert

The Fairmont State University Saxophone Ensemble will perform a concert, directed by Randall Hall, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in Room 229 of Wallman Hall on the FSU campus.

FSUCO to Present Concert on April 14

The Fairmont State University Community Orchestra, directed by Dr. Jack Ashton, will offer a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Colebank Hall on the main FSU campus. 

The FSUCO will perform the music of Beethoven, Purcell, Mendelssohn and Mozart. Guest soloists include Kat Clift, oboe; Cheryl Melfi, clarinet; Kristen Chamberlin, horn; and Jean Preckel, bassoon.
