The Fairmont State University Student Government Association is supporting the Tygart Valley United Way, which represents Marion, Taylor, Randolph, Barbour and Tucker counties, through sales of this year’s “Maroon Madness” t-shirts.

Proceeds from the sales will benefit the “Charting a New Course” campaign, launched by the United Way earlier this month.

The Fairmont State University Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program has been granted a program waiver from the West Virginia Department of Education, allowing for students pursuing a MAT to significantly shorten their path to graduation while still maintaining the program quality necessary to produce effective teachers. Qualifying students must have a bachelor’s degree in the same concentration or content area in which they aim to teach upon completion of their degree.

Sidney and Judith Underwood of Parkersburg, West Virginia have pledged $27,000 to create a scholarship in memory of their son Eric, who passed away in July of 2020.

“The generous gift from the Underwoods is greatly appreciated. Their kind remembrance of their son will have a lasting benefit to Fairmont State students,” said Fairmont State Foundation President, Gary K. Bennett.

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center is pleased to announce the fall 2021 Phyllis W. Moore Authors Series. During the fall series, authors will continue to focus on labor in West Virginia while commemorating the 100^th anniversary of the Battle of Blair Mountain. All events in the series are free and open to the public.

Fairmont State University’s Academy for the Arts has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the George W. Bowers Family Charitable Trust. The grant will allow the Academy for the Arts to provide scholarship opportunities to new and current Academy for the Arts K-12 students.

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will begin work on an online curriculum and resource project, The Trunk of Traditional Tunes, funded by the West Virginia Humanities Council through a CARES Act Emergency Relief Grant. 

Fairmont State University continued its White Coat Ceremony tradition on Friday, August 27 to honor students in the College of Nursing, symbolizing the transition into clinical practice and providing compassionate care.

Fairmont State University’s campus community now has free access to food products and other essential items through a new initiative known as Freddie’s Pantry. Located near Hunt Haught Hall, the pantry was unveiled by the Fairmont State Student Government Association on Tuesday, August 24. 

Fairmont State University has been awarded a Campus Mental Health Grant from the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to launch the University’s Falcon Mental Health Awareness Program. The aim of the Falcon Mental Health Awareness Program is to promote mental health awareness and prevention among the campus community through support programs and by enhancing existing mental health services.

Fairmont State University Board of Governors Chairman, David Goldberg, was named the inaugural recipient of the Francis H. Pierpont Visionary Award at the Marion County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner on Wednesday, August 11.
