French Immersion Day Held on April 28

Every spring, French-speaking educators and community members from around the state gather for a day of language immersion. This year Fairmont State University and Dr. Erin Hippolyte, Assistant Professor of French, hosted the French Immersion Day event for the first time.

Whetstone Evening Celebration Set for May 6

The annual Whetstone Evening celebration will be from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Sunday, May 6, in the second floor student lounge in the Ruth Ann Musick Library on the main campus.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be provided. Contributors are encouraged to come and read their work, which will be done on a sign-up basis at the event.

English Students Attend Sigma Tau Delta Convention

From Wednesday, Feb. 29, until Saturday, March 2, the Marriott at 555 Canal Street in New Orleans played host to over a thousand conventioneers from Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society.  Three students from Fairmont State University’s Beta Omega chapter attended this event, along with their sponsor, Dr. James Matthews. Their trip was jointly funded by the Department of Language and Literature and the Office of the Provost.

American Shakespeare Center on Campus March 23-25

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and the Department of Language and Literature present the American Shakespeare Center’s “Almost Blasphemy Tour” for a week of Elizabethan lyricism, love and oh-so-bitter woe. Three separate productions will take place in Wallman Hall Theatre — “The Winter’s Tale,” “ ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The ticket price for each performance is $10 per person. Dr. Maria Rose, Fairmont State University Interim President, will host a reading by faculty authors at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Shaw House on the shared main campus of FSU and Pierpont Community & Technical College. Dr. Elizabeth Savage, Professor English at FSU, and Debbie Benedetti, Associate Professor of English and Academic Studies at Pierpont, will read from their new works.
