Three Fairmont State University students have been selected for the 2013 Undergraduate Literary Symposium, which is to be held at Marshall University in Huntington on Saturday, March 2.

Issue 31 of Whetstone, Fairmont State University’s undergraduate arts and literary journal, recently won First Place with Special Honors in the 2012 Scholastic Magazine Awards competition hosted by the American Scholastic Press Association. The journal also won an award for Outstanding Use of Color. 

Nineteen Fairmont State University students will witness an important moment in American history by participating in a 10-day academic seminar in Washington, D.C., focusing on the U.S. Presidential Inauguration.

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College will participate in the nationally recognized International Education Week with events intended to celebrate diversity and internationalization.

Fairmont State University will host the West Virginia Foreign Language Teachers Association conference on Sept. 28-29. Foreign language teachers from across the state, representing a variety of world languages and grade levels, will attend the annual meeting, which focuses this year on building empathy through ownership.

Although Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” was first published in 1818 when she was 21, the novel’s content remains relevant to audiences today. For that reason, “Frankenstein” has been chosen as the Common Reader for the 2012-2013 academic year at Fairmont State University. The project will be complemented by a Frankenstein Film Festival and other events throughout the year.

Kestrel, Fairmont State University’s Journal of Literature and Art, will celebrate the publication of issue 28 on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29, with readings by 10 visiting writers.

Admission to the Kestrel events is free and open to the public.

From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, there will be a reception and readings by writers Jan Beatty, Ray Keifetz, Dean Rader, David Salner and Carrie Shipers at the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center.

Fairmont State University is the first university in West Virginia to be awarded a grant to host the Tournées Film Festival, held annually since 2004. The festival is a program of the French American Cultural Exchange (FACE), in partnershp with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.

Dr. Matthew Hokom, Associate Professor of English at Fairmont State University, has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors for the Guardians of the West Fork Watershed, a non-profit organization centered in Marion, Harrison and Lewis counties in West Virginia.

Daleen Berry, a 2008 Fairmont State University graduate and the award-winning author of the memoir, "Sister of Silence," is the recipient of West Virginia's first "Pearl S. Buck Award, Writing for Social Change" award.
