Fairmont State University continues to develop police academy after Supreme Court ruling

Fairmont State University is pleased to announce that the Supreme Court of West Virginia affirmed the decision of the Marion County circuit court, approving the University’s application for authorization to establish and operate a new law enforcement training academy.

More than a hundred members of the Fairmont State University campus community attended the swearing-in and promotion of four campus police officers.

Marion County Deputy County Clerk Tom Antulov officiated the swearing-in of Fairmont State’s new Chief of Police Matt Swain. In addition to Swain, John Nigh was promoted to Lieutenant, C.J. Funk to Lead Officer and Makenzie White was sworn in as a Patrolman. 

Campus Police Officers Recognized for Graduating from Academy

Three police officers in the Department of Public Safety, which provides services for Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, graduated from the West Virginia State Police Academy Basic Class in 2014. The new certified officers—C.J. Funk, Jared Martin and John Nigh—were recognized by the FSU Board of Governors for their accomplishment.

C.J. Funk is a Campus Police Officer for the Department of Public Safety.

Campus Deputy Chief of Police Graduates from FBI National Academy

A Fairmont State University officer was among the 215 law enforcement officers who graduated on Dec. 19, 2014, from the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Va.

Matt Swain is Deputy Chief of Police for the Department of Public Safety, which serves Fairmont State and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

Campus Police Officer Selected to Attend FBI National Academy

A member of the Campus Police at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College will travel to Virginia for a prestigious learning experience in October. Deputy Chief of Police Matt Swain will soon be part of less than one percent of the nation’s police officers that are able to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.

“It is an honor,” Swain said. “It’s something that not a lot of folks get the opportunity to do. I’m very thankful for it.”

FSU Alumnus Killed and Another Injured in Elkins Shooting

The Fairmont State University community was saddened to learn that the deputy U.S. marshal who died following a Feb. 16 shooting in Elkins was FSU alumnus Derek Hotsinpiller, who graduated from FSU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. 

FSU Names Director of Emergency Management/ Chief of Police

Fairmont State University has named Jack A. Clayton as Director of Emergency Management/Chief of Police. This position and the Department of Public Safety, for which Clayton will provide leadership, provide services to both FSU and Pierpont Community & Technical College.
