English Majors to Present at National Conference

Two English majors will represent Fairmont State University at the annual meeting of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society. The convention will be held Feb. 26 through March 1 in Savannah, Ga.

Sarah Queen, a native of Clarksburg, and Marissa Stickel of Lost Creek, will make presentations. Both of the students are seniors at Fairmont State. Queen is double-majoring in English education and Journalism Education, and Stickel is double-majoring in English and French. Matthews is the faculty sponsor of Beta Omega, Fairmont State’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Planned for New Writing Center

The public is invited, along with Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College faculty, staff and students, to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for Fairmont State’s new Writing Center. The ceremony will take place in Room 308 of Jaynes Hall from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The Writing Center was initiated as a proposal for a new Accelerated Learning program. The funds were issued to Fairmont State by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to support a pilot Accelerated Developmental Learning project. 

English Students Attend Sigma Tau Delta Convention

From Wednesday, Feb. 29, until Saturday, March 2, the Marriott at 555 Canal Street in New Orleans played host to over a thousand conventioneers from Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honorary society.  Three students from Fairmont State University’s Beta Omega chapter attended this event, along with their sponsor, Dr. James Matthews. Their trip was jointly funded by the Department of Language and Literature and the Office of the Provost.
