Retired Educators Establish Planned Gift Further Supporting Scholarship for Education Majors

In 2016, a Philippi, WV, native and his wife established an endowed scholarship supporting education majors at Fairmont State University. The couple has recently arranged a planned gift as part of their estate plan and additional cash funds to further support aspiring teachers through the existing Dr. Bob and Susan Hawkins Endowed Scholarship.

Each year, the West Virginia Broadcasters Association (WVBA) announce winners of their Excellence in Broadcasting Awards in various categories for television, digital media, and radio. For the second year in a row, WKKW’s “Jeff and Sarah in the Morning” was honored with the highly competitive and prestigious award for Best Morning Show. Award winners were chosen by a panel of judges representing peer broadcasting associations across the country.

As we near the end of Fall semester, we find ourselves in a sweet-spot of calm that lies peacefully between the warm but busy atmosphere of Homecoming and the often-hectic season of the holidays (and finals). This respite is a great time to reflect on Homecoming 2018 – doing so not only reminds us of where come from, but it also gives us insight as to where we’re going. 

“Red Hot Pokers” make a comeback at falcon alumni 5k

If you were a Fairmont State student in the early 80’s, it is very possible that you knew about Fairmont State’s cross country team—the Red Hot Pokers. 

“One day the cross country team met up with other student-athletes in the Feaster Center for a pickup relay race and we needed a name,” said founding father Brian Hamrick. “We scrambled to find a name and I just shouted out ‘Red Hot Pokers.’ That was the beginning of it all.”

Alumni Association Hosts MEC Tournament Social in Charleston

The Fairmont State Alumni Association invites FSU alumni and friends to attend a special event during the 2016 Mountain East Conference Tournament in Charleston.

The Alumni Association will host a social, presented by Hendrickson & Long, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Celsius Lounge, 212 Hale St., Charleston. Transportation will be provided to the Civic Center for evening session games. Admission to the social is free, but gifts to the Fairmont Fund are encouraged.

Coach Joe Retton Named Parade Marshal for Homecoming 2015

As part of the Homecoming 2015 Sesquicentennial Celebration, the traditional Homecoming Parade for Fairmont State University, sponsored by ACE Hardware, will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in downtown Fairmont.

The Office of Student Activities has selected legendary Fairmont State basketball coach Joe Retton as parade marshal.
