This look at the 1986 Challenger disaster places the teacher who died with six others as they hurtled into space at the center of an exploration of our need to reach beyond ourselves and dare the universe.
What began as a hobby for Don Trisel, a professor of biology at Fairmont State University, and his wife Kim has become much more over the years.
About 10 years ago, the Trisels purchased a piece of land behind their home in Farmington.
“It was all forest,” Trisel said. “We had some beekeeper friends at church, and I suggested that they come out and put some hives on our property and take advantage of that resource.”
Instead, the Trisels’ friends made another suggestion.
The Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia has named Dr. Gregory P. Noone of Fairmont State University as one of five finalists for the 2012 Professor of the Year award. Each year the Foundation honors an outstanding faculty member at a West Virginia college or university.
“Fairmont State University is incredibly proud that Gregory Noone has been selected as one of the five finalists for West Virginia’s Professor of the Year for the second year in a row,” said FSU President Maria Rose.
About 250 students participated in Winter Commencement for Fairmont State University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Feaster Center.

Fairmont State University has named Kaye Caplinger Widney as Vice President for Student Services, the chief enrollment management and student services officer for the University.
With almost 40 years of experience in higher education, Widney is an experienced supervisor and budget manager, having served as Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships at West Virginia University and before that as Director of Financial Aid at Fairmont State.
In October, Fairmont State students called over 6,000 alumni and friends in an effort to reconnect them with FSU and raise support for the Fairmont Fund, which helps fund immediate needs of the university.
