Six Fairmont State University faculty members have been nominated for the 2013 Abelina Suarez Professorship, which will be awarded during the Faculty Recognition event at noon Wednesday, April 24, in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms.
About 375 students will participate in Spring Commencement for Fairmont State University at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the Feaster Center. Video from the ceremony will be streamed live at www.fairmontstate.edu/live.
During the month of April, the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts Department of Music will host two Senior Recitals.
At 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20, senior Cecil Lopez, saxophone, accompanied by John Morrison, will be performing with special guest Elizabeth Bertovich, marimba. Lopez is a student of Randall Hall.
At 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27, senior Sean Lee, guitar, will be performing with special guest Benjamin Male, guitar. A student of Dr. Patrick Joyce, Lee will be premiering several of his own compositions.
The Fairmont State University Saxophone Ensemble will perform a concert, directed by Randall Hall, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in Room 229 of Wallman Hall on the FSU campus.
The performance will feature “The Funeral March of the Marionette” by Charles Gounod. The performance also will include selections such as “Summer Nocturne” by Lennie Niehaus, “Scherzo for Saxophone Quartet” by Warren Baker, “Ye Banks and Braes O’Bonnie Doon” arranged by Lloyd Conley, “Pavane” by Gabriel Faure and “Beale Street Blues” by W.C. Handy.
West Virginia Campus Compact, a coalition of 28 college and universities that encourages and supports community engagement in higher education, honored Fairmont State University with multiple awards at its annual statewide conference.
Fairmont State professor Matt Schmuck’s Friends of Fifth Street Park Project was recognized as the winner of the Campus-Community LINK Partnership Award. The award honors outstanding community service learning partnerships that are grantees of West Virginia Campus Compact’s LINK program.
The Fairmont State University Community Orchestra, directed by Dr. Jack Ashton, will offer a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Colebank Hall on the main FSU campus.
The FSUCO will perform the music of Beethoven, Purcell, Mendelssohn and Mozart. Guest soloists include Kat Clift, oboe; Cheryl Melfi, clarinet; Kristen Chamberlin, horn; and Jean Preckel, bassoon.

Michael Bonadio was the featured artist for “Smeltdown,” a week of collaborative metal casting between the sculpture programs at Fairmont State University and West Virginia University.
On Friday, April 5, 2013, Bonadio assisted in an iron pour at the Fairmont State University foundry, beginning at 12 pm.
