Night at the Races Benefits the Fairmont Fund

Monday, March 12, 2012

A night of fun, food and friends is planned for Saturday, April 14, at the Night at the Races derby-style party. Hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement, the event begins at 4 p.m. with a heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktail reception, silent auction, hat contest and entertainment by the FSU Jazz Band at the Falcon Center on the FSU main campus.

“In my opinion, a horse race is the most exciting two minutes in sports. That leaves approximately two to three hours for fashion!” said FSU Annual Fund Coordinator Jessica Spatafore. “My favorite aspect of getting ready for any Derby party is preparing my hat. Ladies are encouraged to pre-decorate a derby-style hat and wear it with pride to a Night at the Races. Guests will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite hat and prizes will be awarded to two winners.”

From 6 to 8 p.m., attendees will be able to place friendly wagers and cheer on their favorite ponies via an action-packed horse racing video projected on a 120-inch screen. While viewing 10 previously recorded races, prizes will be awarded to “horse owners” and “winners” of each race.

Registration is $50 per person, with all proceeds benefitting the Fairmont Fund. With limited seating available, those interested in attending are asked to RSVP on or before Friday, March 30, by calling (304) 367-4009.  Registration can also be done online.

“We encourage you to make a gift today in support of program excellence and student opportunities at FSU,” Spatafore said. “When you make an annual gift to the Fairmont Fund, your dollars are put to immediate use where they are vitally needed.”

The Fairmont Fund was created to support immediate needs, improvements and updates to enhance educational opportunities for programs at Fairmont State University. Technology updates, research experiences, travel opportunities, lab equipment and new classrooms are just a few examples of ways gifts to the Fairmont Fund can be used.
