Exploration Days Offered for Prospective Students and Families

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

The Office of Admissions & Recruitment invites prospective students and families to explore their options at Fairmont State University. On select days throughout the regular semester, academic-based Exploration Days will be held on the main campus in Fairmont, W.Va.

The following dates are scheduled as Exploration Days: Jan. 24 and 25, Feb. 15 and April 19 in 2013.

At the free event, participants will meet with an Admissions Counselor, visit one of FSU’s six academic colleges and schools and meet in small groups with faculty and/or academic deans.

The prospective students will be informed about the process of being admitted into the university and what will be expected of them, said Christy Burner, Assistant Director of Admissions & Recruitment.

“It’s a great opportunity for any student to be able to come and meet the faculty themselves and to understand what their major might consist of,” Burner said.

Upcoming Exploration Days will be held for FSU’s School of Fine Arts, including the Department of Music and the Art Department; the College of Science and Technology; the School of Education, Health & Human Performance; the College of Liberal Arts, including the Department of  Language and Literature; the School of Business; and the School of Nursing & Allied Health Administration.

Prospective students and families may have the chance to sit in on an actual Fairmont State class. Burner said the individualized meetings will help with college planning.

“A lot of freshmen are hesitant to pick a major because they are not exactly sure what they want to do when they grow up. This is a great tool for them to go in and see hands-on what the department is going to look like, what the classroom is going to be like, and see if it is something that might fit their academic interests,” Burner said.

Before leaving, the visitors can meet with Enrollment Services if they have any questions regarding financial aid, admissions, or housing. They also have the opportunity to take an optional tour of FSU’s campus.

Prospective students and their families will be provided with free lunch at the cafeteria located on the third floor of the Falcon Center during their visit to Fairmont State.
