Cosenza - Sorrento

Day 7 - Sunday, June 17 - Cosenza - Sorrento. 

Today travel to the charming, bayside resort of Sorrento.  We will have time on our own to check on the historical city center with its museums, shops and fabulous views of the Bay of Naples.  Visit the cathedral, with its inlaid wooden chorus, the Basilica of Sant' Antonio with its pulpit and the Museo Correale with the Saltovar collection.  They jealously preserve the memory of the old teachers of marquetry, incomparable artists of wood, Sorrento is famous for its hand crafted inlaid boxes, cameos, carved into conch shells and the famous lemon drink, Limoncello.  dinner at the hotel. Overnight Sorrento.

Today we left the town of Cosenza. A long bus ride awaited us as we traveled north to the resort city of Sorrento.  We traveled back through the mountains of Calabria. Eventually we spied Mount Vesuvius again and we new we were close as Sorrento lies on the Bay of Naples. It seemed like forever that our bus sat in bumper to bumper traffic as we traveled through a tunnel. When we exited the tunnel we were greeted with the most fabulous view of the bay, the Isle of Capri, and Vesuvius once again. The road into Sorrento was a narrow winding road along a cliff. Gino our bus driver is a wonder. He maneuvered the bus through the small roads with no problem. We stopped and took some pictures from an overlook before we traveled down into Sorrento towards our hotel. We stopped at the "Lucky" store and learned how they made their beautiful inlaid wood products, then it was off to the hotel and the swimming pool. The hotel was fantastic, as was the dinner that followed our swim. Many walked to the old town and others went to the Tarantella show. I've heard it was really good. I personally stressed over the Internet access which seems to be so very slow over here in Italy. I did manage to get yesterday's pictures up. I know many of you are following us on this trip and want to see the pictures. Perhaps I'll find the Internet more friendly in Assisi.
