SciTech Advising Office

NEW FRESHMEN

Welcome

The transition to college can be exciting!  It can also be confusing as you learn to navigate the myriad of changes in your new life as a college student.  The SciTech Advising office is available to assist you in making that transition smoothly.  Our office is here to help our students and their families learn about opportunities and resources available to help ensure a successful academic experience.

We’re here to help you learn how to be a college student.

As the saying goes, you have to learn to walk before you can run.  You don’t show up on campus the first day of classes knowing where everything is, how to manage your time, and how to ace your Chemistry test.  The Soar – First Year Seminar, course is a one credit class that meets once a week.  Soar helps you “connect the dots”, the pieces of information you learn as you travel through College that makes you a successful, college educated person.

SOAR – First Year Seminar

The purpose of this course is to help students develop strong connections with faculty, staff and other students who will walk with them throughout their college career. SOAR students will gain knowledge and tools needed to achieve academic success and participate in personal growth activities that help them develop the qualities of a college-educated person. Having someone to walk with you through college and point the way is important to your success. We, along with other members of the Fairmont State community are committed to your success and are here to support you on your journey.

CONTINUING FRESHMEN

Now that you have completed your first semester at Fairmont State, you are developing time management skills, study skills, writing skills, and organization skills in order to be on track to earn your degree.

This website includes important information to help you on your journey throughout your time here at Fairmont State. We encourage all students to get involved on campus, to ask questions and get to know all of their professors. Please visit the SciTech Advising office in Hunt Haught Hall, room 327, if you have any questions or would like to speak with an advisor.

The SciTech Advising office offers support to new and returning transfer students on campus. We recognize that as new students on our campus, you are different from freshmen and have different needs. Transfer students' previous experiences can range from one completed semester to a completed associate's degree, or even a bachelor's degree. As transfer students’ transition to Fairmont State, we strive to meet their academic and social needs through programming, publications, student organizations, outreach, and advocacy.
