Dr. Matthews joined the Fairmont State University faculty in 2002, having earned degrees from Saint Vincent College (B.A.) and Duquesne University (M.A. and Ph.D). He teaches primarily Children's Literature, as well as Introduction to Literature, World Literature and composition courses. Dr. Matthews' scholarly interests include 19th century British Literature (particularly the Romantics), children's literature, comparative mythology, and the literature of fantasy, including science fiction.
When not astounding students with feats of classroom legerdemain, his personal pursuits include traveling, playing cards, watching films, and keeping exotic pets. Dr. Matthews is also an avid amateur ghost hunter and has often scared himself silly in old houses on stormy nights.
