Advising Handbook

MISSION STATEMENT

When you choose one or more of the degree programs offered by Language and Literature, you join a diverse and strong School with a history of strong advising.  Three of our professors, Drs. Hippolyte, Long and Schwer, have won the University’s Excellence in Academic Advising award.  Every advisor in the School of Language & Literature is committed to helping you achieve your intellectual, academic, and career goals through thorough and thoughtful advising.

The mission of advisors in the School of Language and Literature is to offer students individual attention in planning and pursuing their academic and professional goals.  The small student-to-advisor ratio allows us to get to know you and to work closely with you.  Advisors in Language and Literature are able to help you understand the academic policies and degree requirements of the University, as well as of your chosen program of study.  We also are interested in your long-term goals and can help you recognize the many avenues for future endeavors that our programs of study open up to you—including a wide variety of professions and further study in graduate, law, medical or other professional schools.

Advisors in Language and Literature recognize the goals of most students include a first-rate education and a rewarding career.  Our goal is successfully advising you from program to career.  We are further committed to helping you see the connection between learning and life, between your studies in the School of Language and Literature and at Fairmont State and your success in the world beyond college.

Our doors are open, though it is up to you to consult us and to use the expertise we have to offer.  Advisors can do more for you than simply hand over your PIN, but only if we work together.  For instance, advisors can recommend internships, scholarships, and pre-programs (like Pre-Education).  We look forward to working with you to open the doors to your academic and future successes.
