Admissions Requirements Checklist

First-Time Freshmen


  • Application for Admission
  • Notes:  For priority registration, make sure all the pieces of your admission file are in and complete six weeks prior to the start of the semester. Double-check the requirements of your program, some ask for applications much earlier.
  • Official high school transcript or GED/TASC (sent by high school or Department of Education)
  • ACT or SAT Scores (for students who graduated high school less than 5 years prior to enrollment term) *Please note Fairmont State University does not SUPERSCORE results*

    • IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to the global pandemic and resulting cancellation of all spring testing dates, the ACT or SAT test requirement for all FIRST TIME college freshman, entering Fairmont State University for the fall 2020 semester, has been waived. For more information, please read our update.
  • College transcript (if college credit was earned during high school)
  • Immunization record - Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) (if born after January 1, 1957)
  • At least a 2.0 high school GPA and an 18 ACT composite or 950 SAT total score (870 combined Critical Reading and Math scores taken prior to March 2016) 


At least a 3.0 high school GPA and SAT or ACT composite regardless of score (Fairmont State may conditionally admit students who do not meet the basic admissions standards.)

Students are highly encouraged but are not required to satisfy the following minimum high school units:

  • 4 English (including courses in grammar, composition, and literature)
  • 3 Social Studies (including U.S. History)
  • 4 Mathematics (three units must be Algebra I and higher or Math 1 or higher; Traditional Math for seniors will also be accepted)
  • 3 Science (all courses to be college preparatory laboratory science, preferably including units from biology, chemistry and physics)
  • 1 Arts
  • 2 Foreign Language (two units of the same foreign language)

Fairmont State University may admit, by exception, students who do not meet the basic admissions standards.

Advanced Placement Credits


Fairmont State University recognizes certain examinations of the College Board Advanced Placement Program. Students who participate in the AP program and wish to have their scores evaluated for credit should have their scores sent to the Office of Admissions. Students cannot receive credit for a score below 3 on any exam.  Please refer to the Fairmont State Undergraduate Catalog for the list of examinations that are accepted for a grade of CR.

High School Student

Must meet the following criteria:

  • Application for Admission
  • Completed his/her junior year of high school curriculum
  • Current high school transcript (must have grade point average of 3.0)
  • Permission letter from parent or guardian
  • Recommendation letter from the high school principal or counselor
  • Proof of pre-requisite (see catalog)


Transient Student


(students enrolled at another school and returning to that institution)

International Students


All material must be received at least six weeks prior to semester start date

  • Application for Admission
  • Official English proficiency scores (TOEFL of 61 or IELTS of 6.0) if your native language is not English
  • Proof of financial support for first academic year
  • Housing (if applicable
  • Original or certified copies of all official academic records/transcripts. Certified documents must be notarized or attested by the education institution, the ministry of Education of the country, or WES evaluation agency.
  • Official certified course-by-course English translation of foreign high school transcripts and college transcripts if applicable (must be provided by WES evaluation agency)
  • Official college transcript(s) from all colleges attended in United States (if applicable)
  • Transfer eligibly form
  • Proof of immunization of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • Proof of health insurance
