Advising Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is my advisor?

A: If you have not declared your major, the advisors in the Advising Center will help you schedule your classes.  If you have declared a major, a member of the faculty teaching in your major will be your advisor.  See the Advising website for instructions on how to find your advisor.

Q: Can I register myself?

A: Beginning with pre-registration in March 2007, students who have earned 60 hours or more (regardless of which institution they are attending) will be able to access Student Self-Service and register themselves for classes during their registration window.  Check the Registrar's Calendar online for a list of pre-registration dates.  Students who have earned less than 60 hours must meet with their advisor to schedule classes.

Q: If I can register myself, do I still need to see my advisor?

A: Yes.  It is very important to see your advisor.  Your advisor will help to ensure that you take courses in the appropriate order to increase the likelihood you will graduate within your timeframe.  Some courses are offered only once per year or once every two years.  Working with your advisor will ensure you don’t miss a needed course.  Your advisor can also serve as a mentor, providing valuable information about your chosen field.

Q: If I stop going to a class will it be dropped for me?

A: NO.  Students must log on to the Enrollment Center and drop classes they no longer wish to complete.  Failure to do so will result in a grade of FIW, which has the same effect on your GPA as an F.

Q: Where can I get a copy of my schedule?

A: Your schedule can be found by logging on to the Enrollment Center on the Fairmont State website.

Q: Where can I find my grades?

A: You can also find your grades by logging on to the Enrollment Center on the Fairmont State website.

Q: What is a UCA?  How do I get one?

A: Every student has a UCA (Unified College Account).  You must activate this account by going to the Enrollment Center and clicking on “Activate Unified College Account” and following the instructions.  If you need help doing this you may go to the library or Advising Center for assistance.

Q: How do I get a transcript?

A: Official transcripts are provided by the Registrar’s office, located in the Student Services Center.   You can print an unofficial academic history from the Enrollment Center.

Q: How do I change my major?

A: You can change your major by filling out a Major Change Form in the Student Services Center.  A copy of the form will be given to you to take to the Advising Center, where you will be assigned a new advisor.

Q: How many credit hours must I take to be considered full-time?

A: A student must be enrolled in 12 semester hours to be considered a full-time student.
