OVERVIEW OF THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ALLIED HEALTH ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM

This program is for individuals with an associate degree in a health care program.  It is a comprehensive program designed to provide health professionals with the education to become health care managers and assistant administrators.  The curriculum is directed toward developing the management, problem solving, finance, and interpersonal skills that are common to a variety of health care organizations.

Licensed practical nurses who are admitted to the Associate Degree Nursing Program are eligible for the articulation process into either the Traditional or the Non-Traditional tracks. The Traditional track works best for LPNs who have not been practicing in an acute care setting, and/or have not taken most of the general education studies and support courses, and/or can attend regular day time classes and clinicals. The Non-Traditional track works best for LPNs who are working in an acute care facility, and have most of their general education studies and support courses completed, and need to take evening and weekend classes and clinicals.

The articulation process grants 6 nursing credit hours for Fundamentals (N1101) for an unencumbered LPN license. L PNs may test out of Anatomy and Physiology (HLCA 1170 and 1171), Nutrition (FOSM 1110), and Maternal and Newborn Nursing (NURS 1109) for a total of 10 credits. In January 2001, FSU’s Department of Nursing began offering School Nurse Certification.  The program is designed for BSN prepared registered nurses to conduct and coordinate school health service programs.  School Health Nursing provides a new opportunity for nurses to expand their role and enhance professional growth and development through this certification.

To be eligible for enrollment, one must be enrolled in the BSN Program or already hold a BSN and return to complete the School Nurse Certification.

A student currently enrolled in the BSN Program can complete School Nurse Certification by completing successfully Nursing 4400, with an emphasis in school nursing, and Education 2200.

The course of study for the returning BSN includes a 4 credit School Nurse Practicum that has both a theory and clinical requirement.  The clinical component involves the school nurse candidate working directly with a Certified School Nurse in the school...

The School of Nursing and Allied Health Administration offers two program options for the LPN-ASN degree. These programs are limited enrollment classes and applicants apply for these through the application procedure for the ASN program. Application deadline is December 1, but an earlier application is preferred.

The two options are the Traditional LPN-ASN and the Non-Traditional LPN-ASN.

Both programs

  • Require 3 semesters of nursing course work.
  • Mirror the Traditional ASN Program.
  • The LPN with a valid LPN license receives credit for NURS 1101, Fundamentals of Nursing, (6 credits).
  • The LPN must take NURS 1102, Transition for the LPN
  • The LPN may challenge Anatomy & Physiology, Nutrition  & Normal OB.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Fairmont State is designed for Registered Nurses who desire a baccalaureate degree in nursing. This degree program provides career mobility for the associate degree and diploma graduate nurse. The baccalaureate degree is the first professional level of preparation. At this level, the nurse's role is expanded beyond direct client care to encompass the care of families, groups, and communities. In addition, the professional nurse assumes the role of coordinator of care to lead, guide, and direct the delivery of health care based on knowledge gained in support courses as well as nursing literature and research.

Fairmont State University's School of Nursing offers an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing program. This program is two years in length and upon graduation, the student receives the Associate Degree in Nursing and is eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The associate degree nurse is prepared as a technical nurse to care for clients with common health problems in structured settings.
