Dance Preparatory Department
Clogging, Beginning. Students will learn the beginning and basics of Appalachian Clog dance. Irish, Scottish, English, and German folk dance will turn into a foot tapping style usually performed to the downbeat of a song with the heels of the foot keeping the rhythm. From influences of the Cherokee Indians, to African American and Russian Gypsies, clogging will be taught as the true “melting pot” of step dance that it has become.
Clogging, Intermediate/Advanced/Performance /Competitive/Team. Students will expand their footwork and dance knowledge to become current with the competitive nature of percussive dance and movement of today. Tap, Canadian step dance, Irish Hard Shoe, and even street dancing and hip-hop influences will be incorporated into modern day percussive dance. More attention will be paid to precision, placement, and movement as a group.
Folk Dance. Students will explore several traditional dances involving lines, circles and partnerships from various countries such as: Poland, Germany and Italy. This form of dance is story-telling by giving historical references to the people and places. Students begin by learning how each movement can represent what they did for a living or their everyday lifestyles of that specific country.
Modern Dance. Modern dance explores movement, space, rhythm and the dancer’s own creativity with emphasizes on momentum, shapes and patterns and levels. This form of dance is inspired by nature, music, art, and human emotions. Students will explore the space by learning several modern dance techniques such as Graham & Cunningham.
Music Preparatory Department
Let’s Explore Music. Has your child expressed an interest in music? Would they like to learn how to play instrument but you aren't sure they will like it? This camp is a chance to explore different instruments and beginning music theory! During this fun-filled one week camp, your child will learn basic rhythms, dynamics, note learning, and music terminology, along with music games! In addition to getting some basic music knowledge, your child will get the opportunity to choose an instrument for the week to sample. They will have their choice of piano, guitar, or violin! No experience needed, and instruments are provided for this camp. We will accept students with 0-1 year experience on piano, guitar, or violin. Snacks are provided each day of the camp!
Children’s Singing Camp. This camp is for any child interested in singing alone or in a group! This is a high energy camp where the children will learn stage presence, basic singing techniques, movement, understanding dynamics, and performance. This one week camp will culminate with a group performance with students performing songs from all genres.
Teen Show Choir Camp. This camp is open to any singer ages 11-18. This will be a one-week, high energy, show choir camp. Students will get the opportunity to learn popular styles of music, along with different styles of dance. Singers of all experience levels are welcome! The camp will culminate in a concert at the conclusion of the week.
Guitar Ensemble. Guitar Ensemble is open to guitar students who have reached an intermediate level of playing. Students will learn to play a variety of music as a group and have the opportunity to perform. Registrants are required to own a guitar and have the ability to tune it, preferably with an electronic tuner. Guitar ensemble students must be able to read standard staff notation in the first position and be familiar with rhythmic patterns that include dotted note values and triplets.
Guitar Class. This course is designed for all students in beginning guitar. Group instruction will be used with each student being offered the opportunity for participation.
Introduction to Piano. This course introduces the basics of piano playing, music reading, and theory in a group setting in Fairmont State University's state of the art piano lab. This class is perfect for anyone who would like to explore the piano in a low pressure environment along with a friend, spouse, or family member, or anyone who wants to build a good foundation before beginning private lessons. Though the focus of this course is group instruction, students will also receive some individual instruction as well.
Musical Theatre Audition. This course is designed to help prepare students interested in auditioning for upcoming theatre productions. During this course students will focus on acting and singing and the understanding of how these skills prepare students for an audition. Students will experience a mock audition at the end of the course using the pieces they have chosen during the 10 week course.
Theatre Preparatory Department
Acting for Teens. In this course, student will explore basic acting skills including concentration, listening and reacting, physical and vocal awareness and character develop. It will also include basic improvisation and open-scene work. This class may be repeated.
Creative Drama. Using source materials such as books, songs and poems, children will create improvised stories under the direction of a drama instructor. This class will also include drama games, movement and improvisation activities that encourage concentration, working together, listening and creativity. This course may be repeated. The source material will change each semester.
Improvisation. Students will create solo, partner and group scenes using improvisation techniques. In this course, students will explore listening and reacting, creating character, dialogue, pantomime and story building.
Visual Art Preparatory Department
Young Artist Open Studio. Fairmont State University is offering a program where children who love art can learn and have fun. Encourage your child’s imagination and enroll them in the wonderful and exciting world of creativity. Our curriculum offers children the opportunity to use a variety of new media as well as the ability to improve on problem solving skills, self -awareness, and technical capacity. So if your youngster has shown an interest in the arts, give them the chance to embark on an amazing journey of originality, values, and fun.
Creating Together Studio. This studio is designed for parents, grandparents or guardians and their children between the ages of 2 to 5 years old and focuses on genuine art experiences and the process of using a variety of art materials. Enrolling in this class will help your child explore and problem solve, create in a group setting, socialize with other children, improve fine motor skills, and have fun getting messy in a safe place.
Digital Art Making: Private Lessons in Digital Art Making include learning skillsets in Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Illustrator CS5, Adobe Premiere and Encore CS5 and Adobe Flash CS5.
