OVERVIEW OF THE HEALTH SCIENCE PROGRAM

The Health Science program of study provides theoretical and practical training experiences in the study of the human body throughout individual and social growth, development and aging processes.  Developing expertise in the areas of health promotion, behavioral risk, disease occurrence, prevalence, and prevention at the community, regional, state and national levels are study foci throughout the program.  Training opportunities develop abilities toe recognize and respond to the socialization of risky behaviors that jeopardize community health, then to analyze behavioral risk and design and implement various individual and group behavior change plans to reduce health disparities.  This program provides opportunities to learn about, recognize and respond to the physical and social problems associated with a variety of addictions (compulsive: eating (disorders), gambling, drug use/abuse/misuse that include: tobacco, alcohol, illicit and OTC drugs). Courses integrate explanations that clarify philosophical and educational barriers that impede disease prevention and health promotion initiatives in America. Course experiences develop the ability to present of health information one-on-one and group settings through a variety of delivery mediums based on sound research and current statistics. Training experiences will cultivate and enhance the student's ability to design and develop educational materials that consider layout/graphics, reading literacy, health literacy, health issues, and target audience.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS IN HEALTH SCIENCE

Completing a degree in Health Sciences will open the door to several professional opportunities. Students are prepared to:
 

  • assume development of specialized behavior change programs for a myriad of health risks such as
    • hypertension,
    • cardiovascular disease,
    • smoking cessation,
    • diabetes,
    • overweight/obesity for adolescent through adulthood;
  • design prescriptive exercise programs targeting improved:
    • flexibility,
    • muscular strength,
    • muscular endurance, and
    • cardiac-respiratory fitness for the general public or for specific populations;
  • develop and implement health risk assessments for communities, adolescents, and adults;
  • develop and deliver informational/behavioral instruction for the many diverse health risks to individuals or groups.

A Fairmont State University Health Sciences degree prepares students to work for employers such as public health departments, hospitals, corporations, physicians, clinics, public and private businesses, organizations, and agencies. Graduates are prepared to step into positions where the ability to design and administer community and corporate health assessments, health education programs,  health promotion programs, and/or community health-risk appraisals is key.  This course of study prepares the graduate to take the Certified Health Educators Examination, a certification found to open many professional doors.  The skills and training required for completion of this versatile degree prepare the graduate for an unlimited variety of employment opportunities.
