Taking Your First Flight

From a young age, Mark Heefner had two passions – football and flying. During a family vacation to Canada, a 9-year-old Heefner was offered the yoke of a float plane. After feeling the power of flying for the first time, he never imagined doing anything else. As a successful high school football player, Heefner looked for a school that offered an aviation program and had a football team. He found his home at Fairmont State. Whether on the field as part of the Fighting Falcons or in the air at the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center, he continued to soar, graduating from FSU in 2011. “Fairmont State gave me my first opportunity to fly since my experience a decade ago,” Heefner said. “As a new graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation Administration/Professional Flight, my future is unwritten. But I know that wherever I am, I can be found at an airport; and whether in a plane or behind a desk, I know I will love what I’m doing.”
