Below is a list of activities and events coming up at Fairmont State GEAR UP schools that are scheduled to benefit students and families of the program. - GEAR UP Go Center
- The Guidance Department is pleased to announce the opening of the GO Center funded by Gear UP. The GO Center will be open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:30 – 3:30 (students will be able to catch the City bus at 3:30 in front of the school). The purpose of this Center is to work with students in Career/College preparation. Students will be able to use the Center’s computers to search for colleges, financial aid, and career information. Students should register in the guidance office because space is limited right now. As the Go Center develops, we will be offering two – three day seminars to help students locate post-secondary programs. The students will be able to develop and design their own individual programs. Students will work on their own goals and at their own pace. Contact Mr. Bloom at 291 – 9276 for more information.

- Dec 7 (6:00pm) - The December Parent Activity will be located in the Media Center at Elkins High School. We will start organizing our Parent Volunteer Program and will also do a Christmas craft. Light refreshments will be served, and door prizes - two movie tickets and an EHS game pass - will be given.
- EHS GEAR UP Teams with EHS Tiger Express
- EHS GEAR UP is working with the Tiger Express to provide Randolph County families with food baskets and area children with Christmas gifts.
- Please assist the Tiger Express in creating a memorable Christmas for families who otherwise would not have any Christmas. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated. Please make all checks to Elkins High School. If you are interested in sponsoring a child or a family, please contact Barbara Zimmerman prior to December 15, 2009.
- If you cannot sponsor a child, then select a star from one of the train cars that will be posted on the cafeteria hallway beginning November 30th. Purchase the specific gift listed on the star before December 15th, and bring the gift (along with the star) to Room 121.
- If you do not want to purchase a gift for a specific child, the Tiger Express also needs crayons, coloring books, activity books, games, puzzles, CDs, DVDs, toys, and stuffed animals.

- Nov 19 - Grafton High School’s GEAR UP program has developed its own Mentor Program. November 19 will be the first Mentor Mixer. Parents and students interested are encouraged to attend at 6:00 p.m. Computer information will be given to parents and future meeting dates will be established. - Dec 16 - The annual Winter Awards Banquet is planned for December 16 at GHS. The Winter Awards Banquet is a family event. Each teacher will nominate one or two students for grade improvement, behavior, kindness, character, or achievement in community groups. GEAR UP parents and students are invited. - The GEAR UP team is planning an educational trip in April to Louisville, Kentucky. The trip is still pending approval from Taylor County Board of Education and FSU GEAR UP. We plan to visit Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. and the University of Kentucky in Lexington. More information will be given to GEAR UP students and parents after it is approved.
