GEAR UP School Activities

Below is a list of activities and events coming up at Fairmont State GEAR UP schools that are scheduled to benefit students and families of the program.  If you're interested in attending one of these programs, please contact your local school to get more information (school contact info may be obtained by clicking the name of the school).

Barbour County

•  ACT Prep classes:  Classes begin on Monday, July 26 8 am-Noon.  They will take place Monday through Thursday for 3 weeks.  Please contact Mrs. Neptune or the school to register.  More information will be distributed at the first class.  These classes are FREE to GEAR UP students.  Non-GEAR UP students will be required to pay FSU a small fee.  GEAR UP students attending at least 80% of the scheduled classes will receive FREE ACT registration and a graphing calculator.  Questions please email Mrs. Neptune at aneptune@access.k12.wv.us
• The GEAR UP Summer Reading Program begins on Thursday, July 8, 12 – 2 pm at NMHS.   The book discussions will be held for 6 consecutive Thursdays.  The first book in the program will be Stephen King’s Christine.  For more information or to register call Dana Powell 304-986-1855 or email NMARION.L@WESTVIRGINIA.COM.  Each of the six books will be yours to keep!  Space is limited, so register as soon as possible.

University High School

• GEAR UP Go Center
  • The Guidance Department is pleased to announce the opening of the GO Center funded by Gear UP. The GO Center will be open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:30 – 3:30 (students will be able to catch the City bus at 3:30 in front of the school). The purpose of this Center is to work with students in Career/College preparation. Students will be able to use the Center’s computers to search for colleges, financial aid, and career information.  Students should register in the guidance office because space is limited right now. As the Go Center develops, we will be offering two – three day seminars to help students locate post-secondary programs. The students will be able to develop and design their own individual programs. Students will work on their own goals and at their own pace. Contact Mr. Bloom at 291 – 9276 for more information.

• EHS Teacher and GEAR UP Site Coordinator, Teena Wallace, was named EHS Teacher of the Year on March 30, 2010. This is a very much deserved honor for Ms. Wallace. She is well known for giving her students the very best education and goes beyond requirements. Ms Wallace considers individual student needs a high priority.
