The GEAR UP Grant at Fairmont State
"Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs"
In 1999, Fairmont State was awarded a $21 million GEAR UP partnership grant to serve 47 schools in nine WV counties for six years. In 2005, the partnership was continued with a new six-year grant, an additional $31 million, and an expanded area which now includes 56 schools in 14 counties. Currently the GEAR UP grant serves 22 high schools. During years 1-3 of the grant, an additional 27 middle schools were served. GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a federally-funded grant designed to:
- Demonstrate the importance of EDUCATION in today's world.
- Encourage all middle & high school students to set high educational and career GOALS.
- Help students learn how to PREPARE, ENTER, and SUCCEED in college, or other post-secondary training.
- Provide parents with the INFORMATION and RESOURCES they need to stay involved in their students' education and to help them lay out plans for the FUTURE.
- Provide teachers with the tools and training needed to raise both ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS and STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT in the classroom.
