How do I connect my laptop or desktop to the FSU wireless network?

Faculty, staff and students should connect to the Campus_User wireless network. Once a laptop or device has been connected, it should recognize and connect to Campus_User each time it is used on campus.

Connect to Campus_User Wireless with Windows 7

Connect to Campus_User Wireless with Windows Vista

Connect to Campus_User Wireless with Mac or iPad:

  • Click Connect
  • Accept Certificate (wireless.fairmontstate.edu)
  • Enter UCA and Password (Students enter UCA@students)

Connect to Campus_User Wireless with Android Device

  • Settings >Wireless and network settings >Wi-fi
  • Turn on wi-fi
  • Campus User (secured with 802.1x eap)
  • EAP Method: PEAP
  • Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
  • Identity (UCA Username)
  • Anonymous id: Blank
  • Password: UCA Password
  • Connect

How do I connect my laptop or desktop to the Campus_Guest wireless network?

  1. User your wireless connection utility to display available networks.
  2. Connect to "Campus_Guest" network.

I am a student living in the dorms. How do I connect my laptop or desktop to the wired network?

  1. Plug an ethernet cable into working network port.
  2. Turn computer on.
  3. Launch web browser(Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox etc...) the Fairmont State Network Registration Login page will load.
  4. Enter your UCA and password.
  5. Click the Login button.
  6. You will be asked for the type of computer (Guest or Student). Select Student Computer option from the list.
  7. Click the Register Compuer button. You may be asked what type of network you are loggging onto (home, work or public). You may choose the option that you prefer.
  8. When the process is complete, a page will appear that indicates that the registration has been successful. During this process you can test the connection by opening a second browser window to see if your home page loads. If it does, then the process is complete. If not, continue waiting.

I am a student living in the dorms. How do I connect my gaming system to the FSU network?

  1. FSU's current security model does not support gaming on the wireless network. If you live in College Park Apartments you will not be able to connect your gaming system to the network.
  2. Contact the Solution Center in person at 104 Colebank Hall, via email at help@fairmontstate.edu, or over the phone at 304-367-4810 option 3. Provide the following information:
    1. Your Name
    2. Your UCA
    3. Your Dorm Room and Building
    4. Your phone number
    5. Your email address
    6. Your device's MAC address

How can I connect other devices to the FSU network? (i.e. wireless routers and access points)

Wireless access points and routers that are not deployed by Fairmont State University Office of Information Technology are strictly prohibited and will be removed from the network by the Fairmont State University Office of Information Technology. Other network devices that are deployed by users are permitted network access at the sole discretion of the Fairmont State University Office of Information Technology based on the device’s impact on usage and compatibility with Fairmont State University’s network.

I am a Faculty/Staff Member. How can I re-connect my computer to the wired network?

  1. If your computer's ethernet cable is run through your Cisco IP phone, then you should cycle or bounce the phone by doing the following:
    1. Press the "Settings" button.
    2. Quickly press **#**.
    3. The phone will say configuring and it may take several minutes.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Once restarted your connection should be established. If not contact the Solution Center at 304-367-4810 option 3.

Printer

Why can't I print to my network printer?

  1. Restart your computer. This will re-establish a connection to the network and authenticate you as a user.
  2. If you still cannot print, re-install the driver for your printer. See "How do I connect to a networked printer".

Why can't I print to my local printer?

  1. Restart your computer. Occasionally, your local printer will lose connection to your computer.
  2. Shut down the printer. Wait 15 seconds. Turn the printer back on.
  3. Make sure all cables from the printer to the computer are secure.

How do I view networked printer drivers?

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type \\pcounter.
  4. Click OK.

How do I remove or delete my current printer driver?

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Printers.
  3. Locate and right click the driver.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Click Yes.

How do I connect to a networked printer?

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type \\pftfs106.
  4. Click Ok.
  5. Find the name of the printer you want to add (make-model-building code-room code).
  6. Double click the printer to install the driver on your computer.

How do I change my default printer?

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Click Settings.(Some computers may not be set up for this step)
  3. Click Printers and Faxes.
  4. Right click on the printer you want to make default.
  5. Highlight the "Set as Default Printer" left click.

I am a student. Can I print to a network printer from my personal laptop?

Laptops, tablets and other devices may print to networked printer only when they are connected to the Cloud.


How can I connect to the Cloud?

Windows Devices

Windows 32 Bit

  • Connect to the Campus_User wireless network
  • Download VMware
  • The Installation Wizard will open
  • Click Next
  • Click Next
  • Select "I accept the terms in the license agreement"
  • Click Next
  • Custom Setup - click Next
  • Default Server - click Next
  • Enhanced Single Sign-On - click Next
  • Configure Shortcuts - click Next
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish
  • Click Yes to restart your computer
  • After restarting, double-click on the VMware View Client icon on the desktop
  • Under Connection Server, enter cloud.fairmontstate.edu or cloud.pierpont.edu
  • Check the box "Login as current user"
  • Click Connect
  • Enter UCA and password
  • Select domain FAIRMONTSTATE for faculty and staff or STUDENTS for students
  • Select the desired image (ex. Employee Windows 7)
  • Click Connect

  • Click Continue
  • Select desired image (ex. Employee Windows 7)

  • Click Allow to store password in keychain

iPad

  • Connect to the Campus_User wireless network
  • Download and install the free VMware View app from the App Store
  • Click Add View Connection Server
  • Enter host name cloud.fairmontstate.edu or cloud.pierpont.edu
  • Enter Username (UCA) and Password when prompted
  • Under Domain, select FAIRMONTSTATE for faculty and staff or STUDENTS for students
  • Click Done
  • Select desired image (ex. Employee Windows 7)

Android Tablet/Phone

  • Connect to the Campus_User wireless network
  • Download and install the VMWare View Tech Preview (free) from the Android Market
  • Select Add View Connection Server
  • Server name - cloud.fairmontstate.edu or cloud.pierpont.edu
  • Server description - click Done
  • Click Connect
  • Enter UCA, Password, and select the type of desktop to connect to (STUDENTS, FAIRMONTSTATE, OR LABS)
  • Select the desired desktop image

Accessing M: and U: Drives from off campus

You will be asked for your UCA and password to download the VPN Client.

There are two versions depending on your Windows version.  To find your version, click Start, find Computerand Right Click and choose Properties.  If you see 64-bit Operating System listed, download the 64-bit VPN client version.  Otherwise, download the normal VPN client.  If you download the wrong one it will give you an error and not install.  If that happens, simply download the other version.

Install the client, hit next and accept the license agreement, then hit next until it installs. If you get a User Account Control pop-up, click Yes to allow the install to continue.

Enter your UCA and password and hit OK.

Open a Computer window. Near the top you will see an option to Map network drive.

  • Select a drive letter.
  • For the M: drive enter: \\pftfs002.fairmontstate.edu\data or department share name.
For the U: drive enter \\pftfs001.fairmontstate.edu\users\{UCA}

    • If you want to always attempt to access the above drives, check the box that says "Reconnect at logon".
    • If you are on a personal computer and not a Fairmont/Pierpont computer, check the box that says: "Connect using different credentials". When prompted, enter your UCA and password.

NOTE: You will occasionally be disconnected from the VPN session. This is normal depending on your remote internet connection. You should receive a pop-up when this happens. Simply open the VPN Client again and re-connect the session.
