Strategic Goal 6 Progress Report, January, 2008

Goal 6. Provide a comprehensive, integrated approach to the First Year Experience that encourages student success.

  • Pamela Stephens, Implementation Team Chair

Action Step 1:

Communicate academic and co-curricular expectations in every contact with first-year students

1. Continue and improve the dissemination of philosophy and expectations to first-year students.

2. Emphasize to students that they are responsible for their own learning.

  • Expectations for students, faculty, and staff/administrators have been developed through the Provost's Office, and the expectations for students are presented to them during New Student Orientation.
  • First-year “milestones” have been identified and approved by First-Year Team and dissemination strategies will be discussed during subsequent meetings.

3. Conduct surveys to determine effectiveness of Action Step 1.

  • Surveys will be conducted in the future once the expectations are disseminated and communicated to first-year students.

Action Step 2:

Improve the availability of student services.

1. Conduct Student Engagement Survey.

  • The Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) will be conducted during Spring semester 2008.

2. Implement AdvisorTrac software.

  • Working with IT to determine a feasible timeline for software implementation.

3. Improve the availability of online services.

  • Various members of Enrollment Services area are working on developing online orientation modules for new students.

4. Provide services that accommodate students' abilities, backgrounds, interests, and experiences.

  •

5. Continue advisor evaluations.

  • Campuswide evaluation of academic advising was conducted during Fall semester 2007. Results have been compiled but not yet analyzed.

Action Step 3:

Align efforts of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs in support of first-year students.

1. Complete all items from Action Step 3 relating to coordination of efforts among services.

  •

2. Involve all areas in decisions about the first year.

  • First-year team was intentionally devised to include members from faculty and staff and to ensure that those who work with first-year students were represented on the team.

3. Improve campus communications.

  •

4. Provide more orientation to new faculty and staff about the availability of services.

  • The Center for Teaching Excellence holds monthly meetings for new faculty to familiarize them to the availability of campus services.

5. Establish a forum to exchange conference information.

Action Step 4:

Create a campus environment that fosters student development during the first year.

1. Administer Strong Interest Inventory to students in Freshman Seminar class.

  • Strong Interest Inventory was administered to students during Fall semester 2007; however, no tests remain for students enrolled during Spring semester 2008 and funding is depleted to order more. Looking into the possibility to have inventories funded through Title III.

2. Create and disseminate a document about diversity.

  •

3. Structure experiences in which students interact in an open and civil community with people from all backgrounds and interests.

Action Step 5:

Implement these action steps via a first-year team.

1. Gather retention and graduation rates.

  • Ongoing through the Office of Institutional Research.

2. Conduct monthly meetings of the first-year team (Debbie Benedetti, Kit Conner, J.J. Davis, Bill Finley, Fran McClure, Nancy McClure, Nancy Parks, Angela Schwer, Pamela Stephens)

  • Meetings held last Thursday of each month.

3. Coordinate attendance of the first-year team to the First Year Experience Conference and disseminate materials from that conference.

  • Three team members will be attending the national FYE conference in San Francisco, CA, February 15-19.
  •
